Ma'am I tell them it was a privilege to serve in the military in such a great nation and especially in the USMC. I thank them for their respect and let them know that it was people like them that made me write that blank check years ago. Ma'am

I usually express my appreciation, and then I thank them for supporting us and let them know that they are just as appreciated.

Wow it's been so very long since I served so it doesn't happen much! When it does I say thank you it was an honor and a privilege to serve this great nation.

Sad to say in my generation no one ever said that to me or my brother. Glad the same is not true for my son who is now serving. However, if they did I would say, "It was an honor and thank you for your support."

It took about 30 years before anyone said that to me and it actually startled me---i do appreciate the statement and am glad it is used often these days---my response is usually "Thank you, i appreciate your support."

Honestly, I say thank you and then tell them that I don't do much. That I am just a lowly health inspector and that I make Officers mad then go have lunch.

I love this question. Anyone who's walked around with me knows that I'm not a fan of the "you're welcome" response. I'm not serving that individual, nor do I believe that individual is thanking me for my incremental contribution to their personal safety and freedom. I believe that our service to our nation is just that, and while I'm extremely happy that my generation does appreciate the blood, sweat, lives, and tears that we have given for them (sorry, PO2 Sharff, SSG Pride, et. al), it's the nation that thanks and rewards me every day by continuing to be the greatest nation in the world.

When someone says thank you to me, I'm proud to say "It's my pleasure."

Usually a stumble with my words, Try and be polite as possible and say thank you too for picking up the tab for me to have fun as a World Traveler and Citizen of the World. Unfortunately the last Guy that thanked me for my Service in the Parking Lot at Hy Vee left screaming at me and calling me a "False Prophet" because I didn't subscribe to the same Version of Christianity that he did.

just noticed on a reread today that I left out the "and your welcome" at first I would always try to convey how important THEY were to us. Impossible to do in a mere sentence or two, then I would try to distinguish those with genuine thanks in their heart and the rest either providing lip service or a conditioned response. So in the end it was taxes/welcome because if were honest , they won't ever really know that they are thanking us for. and that's not a bad thing
