This will be challenging, fun, and harder than you think. If you belong to a nearby group, you could do a new sock (men and women) and new cap drive (ball cap and woolen caps), for veterans. You could then enlist some friends from this group to go to the local VA Hospital and distribute them. Set this up with the VA Hospital first. The men and women at the VA Hospital enjoy the socks and caps, and especially the company. It was awesome to go out and meet new people, and sometimes get a workout in depending on what we were doing that day. Now that I'm in Okinawa, I volunteer at the USO. Its not as much fun, but there are occasionally opportunities to go read to Japanese children or other community outreach activities. In my opinion, going out and helping the community is the best thing to do because I've always enjoyed helping others over gardening, planting etc. I too am unable to keep them alive. A problem with Veterans here is that there is no VA per se. We do have the VA FMP though. I help veterans with disabilities get care for their service connected conditions here through a network of hospitals. Pay sucks but the benefit of helping veterans is awesome. That also means we have horses at home. I also belong to the Blue Star Mothers of America and volunteer at the local VA hospital and Homes for Our Troops. All on top of building new light rail lines in Denver for a living. It is my "Jesus Job," although I am not allowed to share the Gospel at work. I think that my "little light shines" as much as it possibly can through my work. I know others who have such jobs, and the majority of them see their "jobs" as "gifts" as I do. We are fortunate to be able to give something to those military personnel and veterans who have given so much more for our country than we did. I used to coach 5 teams a season - but my son has graduated to tackle (now i coach there), sp i only coach my girls teams. I have been doing it for almost 10 years now. I started volunteering at the Adoration of Christ one morning a week. I feel guilty calllin g it volunteering. I feel get more out of my "volunteering" than anyone else. I wish i could do more .. I have been feeling that I am not doing enough with my life... I had a rough loss in the family and a unexpected visit to the WW1 Memorial in Kansas City (I never knew it existed - AMAZING - MUST SEE) and this post gave me some time to self reflect.. Thank you! The best advice I can give, is find a group that needs a little help, sometimes it is just an ear that they need, someone to talk to. I have helped more people by listening than anything else. I also began making monthly donations to Wounded Warrior Project, Disabled American Veterans, and later the American Legion and a Native American orphanage in South Dakota. For 20 years I made it a habit to help the citizens against the nations enemies and helped the Army youth groups at Bragg and Arizona. Since 5 surgeries in the last 10 years has taken a little out of me, I have to use a cane. I fight the demons of war and help my brothers when I can. So Captain, there's tons of things we can do to be a positive influence in our lives and our fellowman can benefit from it.
