Returning to the United States the brigade was demobilized in 1919.

Redesignated as the 87th Reconnaissance Troop, it fought in three European campaigns. Although not part of the Brigade in World War II, the history of the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment is significant to the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, comprising half of its current fighting strength. The 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment was formed in 1941 at Ft Bragg. They jumped into New Guinea, in September 1943 as part of the first successful airborne combat jump in the Pacific Theater. On 16 February 1945 they jumped onto the island of Corregidor where they earned the Presidential Unit Citation.

The 173rd Infantry Brigade was activated on Okinawa in 1963 as the 173rd Airborne Brigade (Sep). The unit earned the nickname “Tien Bien” or “Sky Soldiers,” from the Nationalist Chinese paratroopers.

In 1965, the Brigade became the first major unit of the United States Army to serve in Vietnam. They conducted the only combat parachute jump of the war in February 1967. During more than six years of continuous combat, the brigade earned 14 campaign streamers and four unit citations. Sky Soldiers serving in Vietnam earned 13 Medals of Honor. The brigade was deactivated in 1972.

Reactivated in June 2000, the brigade conducted numerous deployments across Europe. On 26 March 2003, the 173rd added to its distinguished history when nearly 1,000 Sky Soldiers parachuted into Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom I. During the operation one Sky Soldier was awarded the Silver Star.

In 2005, the 173rd deployed to Afghanistan along the contentious Pakistan border in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) VI. Five Sky Soldiers were awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in battle.

Upon returning to Italy in 2006, the brigade transformed into the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team. In the spring of 2007, the 173rd ABCT executed an extended deployment to eastern Afghanistan in support of OEF VIII where Soldiers exhibited incredible bravery earning one Medal of Honor, one Distinguished Service Cross, and 32 Silver Stars.

In 2009, the brigade returned to Afghanistan for a third time in support of Operation Enduring Freedom X continuing its proud tradition of selfless service, while executing a difficult build mission south of Kabul.

In 2012, the brigade returned to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom XIII returning to Logar and Wardak Provinces where they executed the difficult task of reducing the footprint of the Brigade while continuing to train their Afghan counterparts.

Upon returning to Italy in 2013, the Brigade was redesignated as the 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne). Today, Sky Soldiers continue the distinction of honored service dating back to World War I and proudly represent the Airborne fighting spirit wherever they serve.Response by SFC Private RallyPoint Member made Nov 23 at 2014 1:43 PM2014-11-23T13:43:18-05:002014-11-23T13:43:18-05:00SFC Mark Merino339829

There is a little known movie HBO put out called "When Trumpets Fade" that did a good job showing what these valiant troops had to endure during their battle in the Hurtgen Forest. It was largely forgotten because the 101st was serving their time in hell fighting in Bastogne. The military capitalized on the "big win" and it did not a big media focus. As a kid from Philly, I owe it to my state to share this whenever I can.

http://pa.ng.mil/ARNG/28ID/Pages/default.aspxResponse by SFC Mark Merino made Nov 23 at 2014 11:51 PM2014-11-23T23:51:01-05:002014-11-23T23:51:01-05:00SPC Richard White339943

I think the 90th Infantry Division should have been included in this vote. The Tough Hombres are famousResponse by SPC Richard White made Nov 24 at 2014 4:17 AM2014-11-24T04:17:22-05:002014-11-24T04:17:22-05:00CMSgt James Nolan340017

As a non-Army SM, of the choices listed, for me it would be between 82nd and Big Red One....doesn't make it right or real, just the two that I hear the most, followed by 10th Mountain, 101st and 1st Cav.

All are historical units.Response by CMSgt James Nolan made Nov 24 at 2014 6:50 AM2014-11-24T06:50:19-05:002014-11-24T06:50:19-05:00SSgt Private RallyPoint Member340171

I would have to say that in the public, of Regular Army units, the 101 is the best known. Rangers and Special Forces have certainly gotten their share of publicity. In my home state of Wisconsin, the 32nd Infantry Division is quite well known, with Highway 32 being marked with a red arrow in honor of the division. The 32nd is now a BCT, but kept the Red Arrow signifying that the 32nd broke through every German line of defense they attacked during WWI. The Red Arrow also holds the record for an Army division with the most continuous days of combat at 654, a record set during WWII.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/32nd_Infantry_Division_%28United_States%29

The recent history part of the article is rather sketchy, but the rest of it is pretty accurate.Response by SSgt Private RallyPoint Member made Nov 24 at 2014 9:56 AM2014-11-24T09:56:31-05:002014-11-24T09:56:31-05:001SG Private RallyPoint Member340214

CW5 Sam R. I also believe the 101 should have the airborne tab replaced by air assault. They are no longer an airborne unit. But the unit that IMHO should be much more famous but has been forgotten by history is the MOST decorated unit of WWII. The fighting 99th. The Nisei (Japanese Americans) kicked some serious ass but we’re mostly hidden from the public because of racism. I suggest everyone check out the movie “Go For Broke” with Van Johnson (not the Michael Keaton comedy).

Actually, what unit is most famous has a lot to do with where you are from or what part of the world you are in. I grew up in middle TN so the 101 was the unit I knew best. Go to the east coast and it’s the 82nd, west coast claims the 7th ID. Different parts of the world had different units operating there so they remember the units that affected their history. Ultimately, it is entirely irrelevant. It doesn’t matter if you are a cook, clerk or a door kicker. It doesn’t matter if you were in the 82nd, 101st, SOCOM or Coscom. Of course, they were not allowed in the Pacific, only in the Atlantic Theater of Operations. As a unit, wouldn't be suprised if they garnered their fair share of awards, either. The State Militias have been fighting for almost 300 Years prior to the organization of some of these units. Florida National Guard Traces its roots to the St. Augustine that was in 1565, they stormed Fort Caroline in 1580. Army Divisions established in 1917: 1st Infantry Div, 3rd Infantry Div, 4th Infantry Div, 1943 the 10th was established. The Massachusetts Militia & National Guard has been in the following: King Phillips War 1675-1678, A series of Battles called Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, Siege of Boston. The War of 1812, Mexican War, American Civil War, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Care to compare an active unit with almost 400 years of history, and I didn't even mention call ups for riots, and disasters.
