For what it's worth, you don't. An assignment is what you make of it, and if you hate it, it will hate you back with a vengeance.

But as far as the question, in the AF, you can do a swap if everything is equal ie: rank, MOS/AFSC, etc. It is rare from what I hear, and be careful what you wish for. The alternative may be worse than just taking the original assignment.

I don't know if it was intentional but I knew someone who got pregnant to avoid going on deployment.

Mine is more of a I took a place I didn't want to go because the alternatives were worse.
When I got my final assignment to Kirtland AFB NM I wasn't happy about almost being on the west coast. I was considering separating as I was closing in on the end of my enlistment to go to school. My plans for school were on the east coast and wanted to set myself up for an easy transition. At the time in the Air Force you could kick back your orders and try again so I contemplated doing this. I went around the squadron first to see where others had gotten orders to: Minot, Grand Forks, Offut and the like. I was the only one not going to a former SAC northern tier base, and decided maybe New Mexico wasn't so bad.

The closest I saw was a guy get his wisdom teeth taken out, so he'd be on profile during an FTX. That and a soldier turn up pregnant 1 week before deployment...

I pulled a string once to get my son to a particular base because he was dating a local girl and no one really cares where you assign an Infantry PVT. Turns out he was one of the first units to deploy to Iraq and made a total of three rotations while his intended unit was going through Stryker upgrade and training...

My assignment to Kuwait was deleted and given to a guy that came back to the Army for that one position. At least that is what the Branch manager stated. He was pushing to send me to Fort Hood.
I let him know that out of 4 options for selection I picked three, Kuwait, Kuwait and Kuwait. This I did to show my desire to get my boots dirty again. I then Asked him to let me pick my poison for the open assignments as I've seen the entire list of positions available. Don't just send me to Hood.
I got his attention and he made a suggestion for Anchorage, Alaska. Best thing ever happened. I've been in JBER since 2008 and recently retired:)
It is not so much what we say but how how say it. Branch managers have all the trump cards and the upper hand.
I add, every 6 months I sent an update to my branch manager to let him know what I've done, where I am at, and what I'm thinking of doing 3 to 5 years down the line. This way I am not just another square peg.

When i went to re-enlist during my time in the corps he told me the only place i was going was camp pendelton. I told him i wanted okinawa or to stay in lejeune atleast for my re-enlistment i didnt care about anything else. He told me nope Pendelton is all you can get needs of the marine corps. I said well thank you very much and its past the time i go on my terminal leave.

I never tried to get out of an assignment. And, some that I thought would be bad turned out pretty good.

In 91 I was recalled back to active duty off of IRR status for desert storm. One of the Females that was Called back with me was 8 months pregnant the ARMY in their infinite wisdom sent her to Walter Reed Hospital to verify she was pregnant before they would send her home. Another one of the soldiers that was called back had 5 days left on his IRR status they made him stay the 5 days and then they sent him home. I had a permanent profile and was forced to ETS during my first enlistment due to medical issues(arthritis both knees) but was told I was recalled due to the needs of the ARMY.

A girl in Korea intentionally got pregnant within a few weeks of getting there. She bragged about getting out of the assignment. However, they kept her there as long as they could and she complained the whole time until they sent her back to the US. But, good old Karma came along and after having her baby, they sent her back.....to do a whole year.

as a national guardsmen i have a civilian job that i was injured on while still an E-4. cut to 3 months later and i was promoted to E-5 into a company that was deploying ... due to the severity of my injury and the length of time to heal i was unable to make said deployment (workers comp is a pain in the ass sometimes) the company Co thought i did it intentionally to get out of the deployment... man did he have me pegged ... hit by a moving car 9 months after i got home from Afg and 3 months before i ever knew i was going to have the chance to go back
