An assignment is what you make of it, and if you hate it, it will hate you back with a vengeance. <br /><br />But as far as the question, in the AF, you can do a swap if everything is equal ie: rank, MOS/AFSC, etc. It is rare from what I hear, and be careful what you wish for. The alternative may be worse than just taking the original assignment.Response by TSgt David L. made Nov 17 at 2016 9:49 PM2016-11-17T21:49:49-05:002016-11-17T21:49:49-05:00SFC George Smith2085791<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>i did not know any of these WWII facilities still were standing...Response by SFC George Smith made Nov 17 at 2016 9:51 PM2016-11-17T21:51:18-05:002016-11-17T21:51:18-05:00Capt Seid Waddell2086211<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Never had an assignment where I didn't want to go.Response by Capt Seid Waddell made Nov 18 at 2016 1:27 AM2016-11-18T01:27:20-05:002016-11-18T01:27:20-05:00PO1 Private RallyPoint Member2086554<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>I don't know if it was intentional but I knew someone who got pregnant to avoid going on deployment.Response by PO1 Private RallyPoint Member made Nov 18 at 2016 7:43 AM2016-11-18T07:43:40-05:002016-11-18T07:43:40-05:00Sgt John Steinmeier2087279<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Mine is more of a I took a place I didn't want to go because the alternatives were worse.<br />When I got my final assignment to Kirtland AFB NM I wasn't happy about almost being on the west coast. I was considering separating as I was closing in on the end of my enlistment to go to school. My plans for school were on the east coast and wanted to set myself up for an easy transition. At the time in the Air Force you could kick back your orders and try again so I contemplated doing this. I went around the squadron first to see where others had gotten orders to: Minot, Grand Forks, Offut and the like. I was the only one not going to a former SAC northern tier base, and decided maybe New Mexico wasn't so bad.Response by Sgt John Steinmeier made Nov 18 at 2016 12:03 PM2016-11-18T12:03:32-05:002016-11-18T12:03:32-05:00SSgt Private RallyPoint Member2089168<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>The closest I saw was a guy get his wisdom teeth taken out, so he'd be on profile during an FTX. At least that is what the Branch manager stated. He was pushing to send me to Fort Hood.<br />I let him know that out of 4 options for selection I picked three, Kuwait, Kuwait and Kuwait. This I did to show my desire to get my boots dirty again. I then Asked him to let me pick my poison for the open assignments as I've seen the entire list of positions available. Don't just send me to Hood.<br />I got his attention and he made a suggestion for Anchorage, Alaska. Best thing ever happened. I've been in JBER since 2008 and recently retired:)<br />It is not so much what we say but how how say it. Branch managers have all the trump cards and the upper hand.<br />I add, every 6 months I sent an update to my branch manager to let him know what I've done, where I am at, and what I'm thinking of doing 3 to 5 years down the line.
