Spent 30 days golfing some really cool courses with my brother. We spent some time saving for the adventure and picking courses that we could get on without membership or handicap score. Off the coast of Washington State is Orcas Island and one of the most beautiful and interesting places we played. Some of the best years of my life were spent on the links, but this trip was special in so many ways.

My friend and I went to Greece; on leave. We went to the islands....Hydra, Poros, and Crete.
We slept on the beach every night except for one: When we stayed in a pensione because of the rain.
My favorite island was Hydra. At that time they had to have their water shipped in. And the only means of transportation were donkeys.
One should experience the Police in Petreus, at least once in a lifetime. In Petreus (on the mainland)- they direct traffic like they are conducting a symphony. All synchronized- with white gloves on! :)
My friend and I of course, swam in the Azure blue Mediterranian Sea.
There were tropical fish all around me; when I swam. I felt like I was in some National Geographic photograph! ;)

Flying home from Pearl Harbor with my family after our ship pulled in there on the way home. They spent the summer with my wife's parents, so we had a great time, including 3 days at the Turtle Bay Hilton...

Went home to spend time with my children. Especially durning the Christmas holidays. They were always happy to see me and we had fun visiting other family and friends.

To be honest, it did not matter were I went at first as long as I had my friends with me and then later on it was my family. There were places that I did enjoy no matter were I was but it was who I was with that made the difference.

The overwhelming majority of my overseas ports-of-call liberties were spent visiting historical and/or cultural sites. I sought out fine restaurants that served the local cuisine. I was lucky to have friends or contacts in many foreign countries, so I would visit them. I admit that I'm a real rarity for the 1971 Navy: I never entered a single bar, I never drank a single alcoholic beverage, I never got a tattoo, and I never, um, visited a house of, um, ...fallen doves!!!

With that said, my favorite leave was when I took "deployment leave" in Honolulu rather than riding my ship back to San Diego. The reason being? So that I could go home that much earlier and meet my 2 month old daughter for the very first time!

I arrived back from deployment on the 19th of December then left again on the 21st with my Dad to go on a safari in South Africa then flew to Tanzania and climbed Kilimanjaro. Twas a blast I even got to carry my old companies guidon up with me.
