If you’re the surviving spouse, child, or parent of a service member who died in the line of duty, or the survivor of a Veteran who died from a service-related injury or illness, you may be able to get a tax-free monetary benefit called VA Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (VA DIC). Find out if you can get VA benefits or compensation.

DoD benefits? Other federal benefits? State benefits?

Assuming the answer is "everything above and more", aside from the DIC you mentioned, here are some suggestions.

First, contact your local county representative of your state’s Department of Veterans Affairs/Services/etc. (it’s called different names in each state)*. They should be very knowledgeable about state and federal resources you might be able to access and walk you through accessing them.

Second, fill out the federal benefit finder (https://www.usa.gov/benefit-finder/death) as that will walk you through many of the different programs within the Federal government.

Some specific advice for the VA:
• If your husband served during a wartime period, then you should look to see if he/you meet the other eligibility criteria for a Survivors Pension* from the VA.
• If you aren't covered under another health plan, you should look into CHAMPVA (you should be eligible as the spouse of a VA rated 100% disabled veteran)
• Check into the Veterans burial allowance*
• If you or your children (if any) are pursuing higher education, check on his GI Bill status and look into the Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) and Fry Scholarships from the VA.
-----------------------------------
* VA page with link to your state’s Departments of Veterans Affairs Office – https://department.va.gov/about/state-departments-of-veterans-affairs-office-locations/
* Federal Government Benefit Finder (death of a loved one) - https://www.usa.gov/benefit-finder/death
* Survivor Benefit Plan - https://militarypay.defense.gov/Benefits/Survivor-Benefit-Program/Overview/
* Survivors Pension - https://www.va.gov/family-and-caregiver-benefits/survivor-compensation/survivors-pension
* Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) - https://www.va.gov/family-and-caregiver-benefits/health-and-disability/champva/
* VA Veterans burial allowance and transportation benefits - https://www.va.gov/burials-memorials/veterans-burial-allowance/
* VA Educational benefits for spouse/surviving children - https://www.va.gov/family-and-caregiver-benefits/education-and-careers/dependents-education-assistance/
