In the defense, 34 yr old, COL Joshua L. Chamberlain took the 20th Maine and dashed down hill with fixed bayonets to counterattack the Confederates trying to take over the high ground. Under no circumstances were the 20th Maine to surrender and have the Confederates break through. The 20th Maine was the Union's Army left flank to protect the 83rd Pennsylvania, 44th New York and 16th Michigan. I traded with another Marine to go to Peleliu. I was not disappointed. It was the best battle sight tour I have ever been on. I also have seen Ft Sumter, Ft Pulaski, Ft McAllister, Ft Moultrie, Old Ft Jackson and Ft Cinch all on the east coast during the last few years. On my list of battlefields I would like to visit someday are: Gettysburg, Ft Wagner, Potomac, Chickamauga, Chattanooga and too many to name. I went there in 2008 after spending some time in Korea. The original idea was my band would fly in, do the memorial ceremony, then immediately fly out. No time for a tour, pics, or anything like such. I think my attached pic shows that wasn't exactly the case. But, last year I had the privilege visiting and participating in the battle of Hastings. Even made the poor choice of doing the march from Stamford Bridge to Hastings as one of the Norman fighters. When flying the old prop jobs to Korea in 1957 we had a broke bird that had to be worked on and we all walked around Wake Island. Old WW2 airplanes were still around the island in the water. You could still see damage in Korea from the Korean war. I want to visit the battlefields where my grand father, Sgt. Harold Wilson Chaney, USA, fought and was wounded by a German grenade in WWI. I am still working on finding out his unit, where he fought and when. It is my goal to walk where he walked, walk in the remains of the trenches he fought and was wounded in. While I cannot see what he saw, I can see the areas he saw.
