What Battlefield do you want to visit?

Today, February 19th, is the 72nd anniversary of the start of the Iwo Jima battle. One of my goals is to go on one of the yearly tours. There are other places that I want to see, but Iwo Jima is at the top of my list.

Sgt Theodore Hallock - I would like to go back to Chu Lai, the site of Operation Starlite. I was in 1st Engineer Bn attached to 7th Marines. An amtract got knocked out and they had our demo guys blow it. I saw a picture some time back of a track off this amtract on an elevated concrete pad set up as a memorial. I would like to visit several of the battle sites around Chu Lai.

I would like to go to either the Villa Verde Trail, or Buna along the track taken by the Ghost Mountain Boys.

I would like to visit the site of the battle of Waterloo, read quite a bit about over the years and after Gettysburg which I had the good fortune to take many tours of over the years,it is a very interesting battle to read about and would like to see the terrain where the actual battles were fought.

Been to Petersburg, Sailors Creek, the Wilderness and Vicksburg. Visted Round Mountain, Honey Springs and Boggy Depot right here in Oklahoma. Would like to make it to Gettysburg but that might have to be on the bucket list. Most likely will go to Pea Ridge, Arkansas this Spring because it is only about a hundred miles from my house.

I would like to visit Gettysburg at some point.

Growing up, I wasn't too far from the Little Bighorn battlefield (Custer's last stand) and have visited there several times over the years. It is quite awe-inspiring to stand there and picture everything that took place.

Normandy Beaches would be first on my list. When I was stationed in Germany, we did an officer professional development tour of some of the Battle of the Bulge frontlines. That was a moving tour, especially standing in a depression that was a company command post in 1944.

Sgt Private RallyPoint Member Defense of Little Round Top in Southern Pennsylvania, July 2nd 1863. In the defense, 34 yr old, COL Joshua L. Chamberlain took the 20th Maine and dashed down hill with fixed bayonets to counterattack the Confederates trying to take over the high ground. Under no circumstances were the 20th Maine to surrender and have the Confederates break through. The 20th Maine was the Union's Army left flank to protect the 83rd Pennsylvania, 44th New York and 16th Michigan. Later after this historic battle, COL Chamberlain decision to hold Little Round Top was credited to saving The Army of the Potomac led by MG Meade.

I was slated to visit Iwo back in '98. I traded with another Marine to go to Peleliu. I was not disappointed. It was the best battle sight tour I have ever been on. I would do it again if i could.

I already visited Pearl Harbor in 2004 and visited the site of the Battle of Pickett's Mill in Atlanta, GA. I also have seen Ft Sumter, Ft Pulaski, Ft McAllister, Ft Moultrie, Old Ft Jackson and Ft Cinch all on the east coast during the last few years. On my list of battlefields I would like to visit someday are: Gettysburg, Ft Wagner, Potomac, Chickamauga, Chattanooga and too many to name. Other places would be famous WWII battlefields: Normandy, Bastogne, Midway Island, Ardennes, etc.

If you get the chance to go to Iwo Jima rest assured it is well worth the trouble, time, money, and energy. I went there in 2008 after spending some time in Korea. The original idea was my band would fly in, do the memorial ceremony, then immediately fly out. No time for a tour, pics, or anything like such. I think my attached pic shows that wasn't exactly the case. We didn't get to visit the beaches, but we were able to hit up Mount Suribachi.

There are countless battle sites that I would love to visit. But, last year I had the privilege visiting and participating in the battle of Hastings. Even made the poor choice of doing the march from Stamford Bridge to Hastings as one of the Norman fighters. I have visited Gettysburg, Vicksburg and the Alamo.

Normandy, and just about any other WWII battlefield (I will be visiting Bastogne next month) and any Civil War battlefield ( I have been to Gettysburg and Wilson's Creek/Carthage).

When in school at Langley AFB we visited some battle fields around the area. When flying the old prop jobs to Korea in 1957 we had a broke bird that had to be worked on and we all walked around Wake Island. Old WW2 airplanes were still around the island in the water. You could still see damage in Korea from the Korean war. There were very few large trees also.

I am still working on this one. I want to visit the battlefields where my grand father, Sgt. Harold Wilson Chaney, USA, fought and was wounded by a German grenade in WWI. I am still working on finding out his unit, where he fought and when. It is my goal to walk where he walked, walk in the remains of the trenches he fought and was wounded in. While I cannot see what he saw, I can see the areas he saw. Absorb as much as I can, photograph the places he may have been.
This is a bucket list mission I want to complete ASAP.
