Just because I don't agree with it doesn't mean I won't defend his right to open carry, just as I will defend someone's right to stand on the flag. As the subject said in the story, "If we don't exercise our rights, the government won't hesitate to take them away. Personally, I don't like this. Not. One. Bit. My only rhetorical question is "Why?" I am a gun owner. I live in Colorado. I enjoy recreational shooting. I have a couple of rifles and some pistols as well. My wife enjoys shooting. Two of my three children enjoy marksmanship as well. Like my kids, I grew up in a household where there was no mystique around fire-arms. While I do support responsible gun ownership and my 2nd Ammd rights, I do not brandish my arsenal while doing everyday things.

Every time I see something like this, my thoughts are jarred back to the stereotypical "militia man" --and not the good kind of militia man. He's making his statement by, effectively, showing off: "Look what I can do!" This, in my estimation, is NOT responsible fire-arms' ownership. He's causing a ruckus ...and unnecessarily so. Actions like this only serve set back the cause(s) of those of us who enjoy our right to bear arms... responsibly. IF he is willing to accept the consequences of his actions then so be it.

Anyone with some knowledge of de-arming someone could have very easily taken his rifle away from him and use it against a lot of people. a 100 rd drum? Really?

I get the whole Open Carry movement and why it is occurring. I do not open carry, but I am not going to tell someone (that is within the law) to not do it. As long as they are exercising their rights in a safe manner with a weapon they intimately and they are willing to fight (To the death) to retain it. Is it dumb or stupid of him to exercise his rights? No.

Would I carry a rifle in the ATL Airport? Hell, if I had a SAW I would carry that in the ATL Airport. Once upon a time, concealed carry was frowned upon while open carry was not. The thinking was that one must have ulterior/nefarious motives for hiding the fact that they are armed, whereas to carry openly was to demonstrate that you are not a threat and/or do not intend any aggression.

Now that old notion has been flipped on its head somehow: keeping your weapon out of sight is considered polite, and openly carrying it is considered threatening. I don't really know how this came about. Perhaps less people own or have experience using firearms these days, and so guns become this alien thing to them? It's easy to fear something you either don't understand or are unaccustomed to, and so perhaps a lack of familiarity is to blame.

Heck, I bet if a guy walked around the airport with a katana sword strapped to his back, people wouldn't react like this. They'd probably just think he's a huge nerd. Even though a moderately trained person could easily kill a decent number a people with a katana before the cops shoot them. And it'd be relatively quiet, so it may take awhile for first responders to figure out what's causing all the screaming. Anyway, I think my point is that cultural norms don't necessarily dictate whether a person's actions are inherently stupid or not, they only dictate social acceptability. I think that individuals reacting with alarm to his carrying a firearm through the airport, is more a reflection on them and their opinions than it is on the armed person.

All philosophy and such aside: a drum magazine, really? Expecting the zombie apocalypse Bro-seidon?
