I have had limited experience with the Oath Keepers asking folks to join at local gun shows or out at the poker runs here in Vegas. Just wondering what people thought.

I have read criticism of these groups by other groups who are supposed to be looking out for the rights of all (SPLC, ADL). Although I don't know much about Oath Keepers or Three Percenters, I can definitely see why others would be afraid of the potential for home grown violence that might be perpetrated by factions of these groups.

If they follow the law of the land, they should be okay (in my book). The perceived problem is likely that they attract people who might not be so careful about following the law of the land and might have a tendency to want to be violent. Whether that criticism is valid, I don't know. But you know what they say about perception being reality ...

Chief, I am aware this post is well over a year old. I too used to believe the Southern Poverty Law Center to be a reputable source. That was until one of their articles on the Oath Keepers and their aggressive intimidation of good folks who gathered at southern Oregon courthouse to ask them to leave their city (Grants Pass, Oregon) and to please let this issue be worked out through the court system. The issue in question was the Sugar Pine Mine Security Operation where the BLM was threatening to burn down buildings on a gold claim, arrest anyone on this land on the BLM's deadline of April 25, 2015. The BLM alleges that the miners did not have surface rights to the mine and that subject to a 1955 federal law regarding mining operations, they were not incompliance and were threatening to burn all buildings, seize all equipment. The miners went to court claiming they have had this mining claim since the 1800's which would exempt them from the 1955 federal law. Yet the BLM took no heed to that. That is where we stepped in at the miner's request. We denied federal agents access to this mine and yes we did so armed. We established a security operation. We did not do so to simply look for a Bundy Ranch Redux. The last thing we wanted was to fire on federal agents. In fact, many folks from across the country showed up at the mine armed, eagerly looking to start some god damn revolution. We threw those morons out of the camp. All we did was to ensure the miners were afforded their 4th and 5th Amendment rights. I will not bullshit you, I for one was scared shitless about what the BLM was going to do when the deadline came (25 April 2015) That deadline came and went without a shot being fired. Once a federal judge put a restraining order on the BLM from accessing the mine until the case was adjudicated, we stood down. I was relieved and proud
The SPLC wrote that Oath Keepers were rude and aggressive and were threatening these folks who asked them to leave with violence to the point that these folks had to flee into the courthouse. Yet the problem was, I was there at this press conference along with other Oath Keepers, including an Oath Keeper who was the outgoing Sheriff for Josephine County, not a deputy but the Sheriff himself. My leadership at that press conference were genial, calm rational and by no means were we intimidating whatsoever. In fact, those giving the press conference never fled inside the courthouse

The SPLC outright lied about what occurred that day and I was saddened to learn that the SPLC was literally fabricating a story.
Additionally the SPLC also wrote another hit piece about us Oath Keepers when we were on Operation My Brother's Keeper. OBK was our response to providing an armed presence at our nation's recruiting stations in the aftermath of the deaths of five of OUR nation's finest, four Marines and one Sailor in Chattanooga, Tennessee by a DAESH wannabe. I was proud to be involved in that operation. We were professional about the operation. We notified ahead of time to law enforcement and the recruiting station command what we were doing, and we did it. I know some of you guys think what we did was a joke, but the majority of recruiting personnel thanked us and appreciated what we were doing with the exception of the Naval recruiters. They ignored us , locked the doors and ultimately went home and would return only when we were gone. Fair enough

TSgt (Join to see), I understand that the Three Percenter movement was started by Mike Vanderboegh. He summarizes the doctrine of the Three Percent thus: "The Three Percent are the citizens the Founders counted on to save the Republic when everyone else abandoned it. And we will. There will be no more free Wacos and no more free Katrinas. For we are the Three Percent. We will not disarm. You cannot convince us. You cannot intimidate us. You can kill us, if you think you can. But remember, we’ll shoot back. We are not going away. We are not backing up another inch. And there are THREE MILLION OF US. The next move, if any, is up to the aspiring tyrants among the domestic enemies of the Constitution." from http://sipseystreetirregulars.blogspot.com/2014/06/a-brief-three-percent-catechism.html
It identifies with the 3% of the population that were actively engaged in fighting the British at any given time during the Revolutionary War.
It is not an aggressive movement. It's more like a porcupine that won't be driven back any more: if you try to push it any farther, you're going to feel those needles.

Oath Keepers was founded by Stewart Rhodes, a Yale law school graduate and former paratrooper, on Lexington Green, April 19, 2009. It is "a non-partisan association of current and formerly serving military, police, and first responders" dedicated to keeping the oath to defend the Constitution. Specifically, there are ten orders that Oath Keepers deems would violate the oath if obeyed. They therefore resolve the following:

1. We will NOT obey orders to disarm the American people.

2. We will NOT obey orders to conduct warrantless searches of the American people
.
3. We will NOT obey orders to detain American citizens as “unlawful enemy combatants” or to subject them to military tribunal.

4. We will NOT obey orders to impose martial law or a “state of emergency” on a state.

5. We will NOT obey orders to invade and subjugate any state that asserts its sovereignty.

6. We will NOT obey any order to blockade American cities, thus turning them into giant concentration camps.

7. We will NOT obey any order to force American citizens into any form of detention camps under any pretext.

8. We will NOT obey orders to assist or support the use of any foreign troops on U.S. soil against the American people to “keep the peace” or to “maintain control."

9. We will NOT obey any orders to confiscate the property of the American people, including food and other essential supplies.

10. We will NOT obey any orders which infringe on the right of the people to free speech, to peaceably assemble, and to petition their government for a redress of grievances.
Long version available at http://oathkeepers.org/oktester/declaration-of-orders-we-will-not-obey/

I think that both the Three Percenter movement and the Oath Keepers organization are well-intentioned, admirable, patriotic, and law-abiding groups.

Oath Keepers organized armed security (volunteers who brought their own gear) during the Ferguson riots for small businesses (mostly minority-owned) who couldn't afford to pay a security company. Their efforts were effective.

I am involved with both the Oath Keepers and the III%er group. The III% do not require military service to become a member whereas the Oath Keepers do require members to be a veteran or currently serving or law enforcement whether current or retired
