On paper, to me, if both teams show up and play the way they've been playing recently, Carolina will crush them. And Peyton Manning will be longing for "the good old days" of Superbowl 48, because the outcome here could very well be worse than beating they took from Seattle.

While, Denver's formula defensively is far better than it was last time, the problem is that their offense has been thoroughly underwhelming this year. If Carolina is able to hang a couple scores on Denver early and their defense just shows up at the stadium that day and plays average, Carolina wins, because Denver's O is definitely not built to come from behind in a big deficit.

I like underdogs though, and "Any given Sunday"...right?

For Denver to win, I think they need to show up with a huge chip on their shoulders looking to prove something. Does the number 1 D in the league show up, and play like it for the whole game, or does the D that gave up the win to Oakland in Denver a few weeks ago show up? Their D has got to keep it close, play fast, physical, and smart. They've got to contain Cam Newton and force Carolina's offense into defensively advantageous down and distance situations. If they're able to do that, and attack the football every chance they get to create turnovers, it will limit Cam's time on the field. I think they're capable of those feats, but "capable" doesn't mean automatic. Again, it just depends on which Denver team shows up. The other important factor, for Denver to win I think, is that Peyton Manning will have to have the game management performance of his life, and Denver's running attack will have to be very solid. The Denver offense has to first of all, score on any opportunity given to them by their defense or special teams play. Then, on less advantageous field position situations, they'll need to chunk out 3-3 1/2 yards a play, sustain long drives that consume the clock, keep their defense fresh, and limit the number of Cam's touches throughout the game as much as possible. A well timed and successful trick play or two wouldn't hurt either. I wouldn't be disappointed to see them go for it on 4th down a couple times if they're just inside Carolina territory but out of field goal range, just in the hopes of keeping possession of the ball, and the clock going without Cam on the field. If there's ever a time for an offense to finally come together and execute consistently throughout the game, it's now.

For Carolina to win, I think they've just got to go at it as business as usual, and execute at the level they've been performing at for a while. Now this is much easier said than done. Especially with the distractions the Superbowl has to offer. I think the biggest thing Carolina has to worry about going into the Superbowl, is the tendencies of favored teams to start believing to much of their own hype. Do it just one game to soon and it could be ugly...It happened to Denver 2 years ago (anybody remember Wes Welker on the sideline? "We're the best offense in NFL history...") and it always seems to happen when you least expect it. Defensively, from Carolina, I wouldn't be surprised to see 7, 8 and maybe even 9 in the box at different times to show "run stop" then bailing to coverage with a 4 man rush, trying to lure Peyton into throwing the ball deep, to generate takeaways.

All things considered, Carolina will probably win, I just hope it's not a blow-out as those games get pretty boring to watch. But you can't underestimate the genius mind of Payton Manning! Carolina blew a lot of teams out of the water and will be over confident. Denver had a lot of close games and figured out a way to win. Denver by 6 points.
