Both are very well built and reliable but pricey. LWRC is under contract to provide UCIW's to UK Special Forces. LMT has had a contract to provide M4's to our military. I'm only commenting on these two brands because I have experience with them, but I think there are many good brands, including some relatively inexpensive ones. You'll need to decide on whether you want a gas piston or direct impingement. Both have their pros and cons. You'll also need to decide on barrel length and caliber. .223/5.56 loses a lot of energy out of shorter barrels. They make a good rifle and the prices are reasonable.

You can spend more and get an uber fancy one from a place like Daniel Defense, but it isn't going to do anything more than the Stag besides thin your wallet. I guess you need to ask yourself what is important to you and what you really want in your weapon, what you will be using it for, what caliber do you want and what your budget is. I have several AR-15 platform rifles, of various calibers, some I have purchased and others I have built. I have a couple high-end rifles, some mid-range rifles, and then some lower end rifles that I took in trade or bought because the price was right, but right now one of my favorites is my Springfield Armory Saint Edge. Decide what you want to spend and then do some research and go from there. The colt 6920 LE is a great choice. You can even buy one with all magpul furniture and a vertical fore grip. I would suggest you drop in a different trigger. They are typically between 7 and 8lbs. But its almost as close as you can get to the standard military m4 with semi fire only. Only 1200 or so. Not so much the A1, but it worked. A brother bought a Ruger and I liked the price. I checked it over and it seems to be well built. Not exotic like some, just a basic AR.
