People often associate IG as something bad but in fact they are there really more so to assist soldiers and units with understanding policies and regulations. I can honestly say in the dozen or so interactions I have had with IG they've all been positive and informative. They are a tool to ensure proper interpretation of policy, regulations and other issues that arise out of a Command. Most think of the IG as that place where Soldiers can go to for grievances against the Command. While that is a role that the IG plays, I relied on their ability to provide detailed answers that were backed up by regulations to answer questions that either Soldiers or my Commander had. We also bounced policy letters off of them prior to signature to ensure that what we were putting out was IAW with current regulations.Response by 1SG Steven Stankovich made Apr 27 at 2014 1:32 PM2014-04-27T13:32:53-04:002014-04-27T13:32:53-04:00SPC Charles Brown112917

No combat ready unit has ever passed an IG inspection, and no unit that has passed an IG inspection is combat ready. In my 12 years of military service I never once passed an IG inspection, something that I was very proud of by the way. This told me that my unit would be ready to go into combat and be ready for it. Most of the glitches in the units I was assigned to were attributed to records keeping, and spelling errors on the paperwork. Having an IG cleaning party was a simple waste of time, no matter how much you scrubbed, dusted, or shined/polished it was never good enough for the inspectors. One unit had the motto of the IG is coming, do the best you can but at least make it look like you are doing or cleaning something when they come by. And if you really wanted to drive them crazy start singing "Don't Worry, Be Happy" when you see them coming. They never hung around me very long when I did this.Response by SPC Charles Brown made Apr 27 at 2014 1:55 PM2014-04-27T13:55:21-04:002014-04-27T13:55:21-04:00SGM (R) Antonio Brown112918

I have had a great working relationship with the IG. I had an issue with a previous unit that failed to process a "change of rater" NCOER. I went through all appropriate channels before making a complaint. After calling Division IG, my NCOER was taken care within 24 hours. Imagine that!!

While serving in USAREC, I witnessed a peer of mine utilize IG. He had been following up with his leave form, using all appropriate channels. This was over a two month period. It was the day he was suppose to sign out, he had to no choice but to call IG. End result was the BN Commander and CSM pulled in all leadership from the company commander and down. The company leadership had their feelings hurt and had no choice but to do their job and sign his leave form.

Gotta love USAREC!!
