What are your expectations from a Soldier that is arriving at their first Duty station?

What do you look for in a New Troop? What do you wish Drill Sergeant DA Platoon Sergeants and Instructors would spend more time on? What do you see lacking in the Troops you have recieved?

I would expect them to be there to learn to be the best hey can be. To seek out guidance when needed and listen to those around them on how to become a leader.

I expected them to have their military bearing and be eager to learn.

I expect they should know and understand military bearing. They should also understand they received only the "basics". Now they've arrived at their duty station their real education and learning will begin.

At least the basic military concepts, discipline, bearing, a mutual respect for your peers, and a genuinely positive attitude.

Willing to learn his job above all else. Stay out of trouble. The new guys I've had that had these two attributes are NCOs now. The ones that didn't are specialists at best.

I expect them to know that a "troop" is an organization, not a person, and that an individual would be a trooper, or shock troop, or storm trooper, or if you want to get fancy, a member of a traveling troupe, but an individual is never a "troop". ;0). Sorry, decade long pet peeve..

Everything that's already been said in the six replies already in this thread. New soldiers need to understand that OSUT was the beginning of their training, not the end.

Doesn't matter, enlisted or officer,
1) You are a safety officer. Act Like it.
2) Immediate, Intelligent Obedience. Embed that in your brain housing group
3) Know enough to know when you don't know. Say something. When you know it "all", we'll promote you so that you don't know it "all" anymore.
4) Admit it when you screwed up, as soon as you know you screwed up.
5) If you knew you screwed up and didn't fess up until after you were caught your not worthy of trust.
6) When its all over, if you don't understand, discreetly and respectfully ask why. Ask the chain of command, not the unit malcontent.

Right now, we just hope for new Soldiers to be able to pass a standard APFT, not be on a permanent profile out of AIT, know the basics of their jobs, and have some Military discipline and bearing.

Yes, we get Soldiers coming to their first assignment with permanent profiles and not able to pass an APFT. How permanent profiles are written for IET Soldiers is a mystery to me...
