If you are an officer, you must have agreed to serve six years in addition to your original obligation."

Link to referenced statement: https://benefits.va.gov/BENEFITS/factsheets/education/CH1606.pdf

He is currently 4 years into his 8 year service obligation. Does this mean he must serve (or at least sign for) a total of 14 years to receive any GI Bill benefits? He wishes to transfer any education benefits to his daughter.

I couldn't mind much of anything online and decided to ask y'all fine RallyPoint goers.

Thanks in advance.

Minimum active duty service for Post 9/11 is 90 days, aggregate, which entitles the Servicemember (SM) to 40% of the Post 9/11 GI Bill and to be eligible for 100% of the Post 9/11 SM must have at least 36 months of active duty time.

Example: if the SM is eligible at the 40% rate that means that the benefit pays 40% of tuition and fees to the school or training program, 40% of the monthly housing allowance to the SM and 40% of the books and supply stipend to the SM for 36 months. Percentage level is based on active duty time, 90 days to 36 months ranges from 40% to 100%.

Other considerations: if SM is medically discharged, time in service does not matter, they are eligible for 100%. If SM has a Purple Heart they are eligible for 100% regardless of active duty service time.

Generally, obligation service does not apply to enlisted SM's. They can start accumulating time when they are serving in an active duty status.

Once the SM has education benefits to transfer to a child or spouse and have at least 6 years of military service they can do so but must be able to serve a 4-year additional service obligation (ADSO) from the date the transfer is approved. Transfer of the Post 9/11 is a DOD retention program—DOD makes the approval, but the program is administered by the VA—benefits are paid by VA. Transfer request can be made on milconnect—https://milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil/milconnect/ DOD approval letter will be posted on the page request is made.

Approval requirements can vary by branch and component. i.e. active duty requires a 4-year ADSO, NG / RES may require at least a 6-year obligation from date of a transfer request.

effective 1 Aug 2019 — SM's wishing to transfer the Post 9/11 GI Bill must do so after 6 years of military service but before 16 years of military service and must be able to serve an ADSO from date of request/approval.

MGIB-AD and MGIB-SR cannot be transferred as far as I know.
