Germany will be a much tougher process-many folks seek and work to get the few remaining assignments in GE. Good news is it has a lot to do with your rank and willingness to work towards a longer stint in the Army. Many times you can do well in your reclass school and earn a spot to anlocation, if available; you can earn a spot through personal achievement (300 APFT, etc) and the better news is there are assignments in the potential new MOS all around the world so it is up to you how far you go. However, the MOS is hard to promote past SSG, it is a personality and personal power MOS and you will have to circumnavigate the pitfalls of a system like that as you progress. If you work hard, stay fit, focus on the Warrior and combat skills you willl excel. Also, many slof coal units are looking for Soldiers who excel in the MOS (RGR, 160, SF) and that is a great route to reach rank and position in the MOS. If you're good at building relationships with others in the logistical world then you can become one of the 'wizards' that people come to when they need things. This will greatly enhance your standing within your unit, and with your CO, 1SG, etc..

The negatives are relatively few. They include the requirement to participate in other unit operations that will take away from the time you have available to focus on your primary tasks and responsibilities. If you're an 'outdoors' soldier you will probably chafe at the time you have to spend in a supply room or garrison environment.

Duty stations are what you make them. While some come with inherent hardships. all of them can be rewarding and enjoyable. The best assignment I had was not Japan, or England. It was the 4+ years spent at the NTC in the Mojave Desert.

If you want to deploy a lot there are many ways for you to go. The obvious places come to mind; Fort Campbell, Fort Bragg, Ranger battalions, and so on. Less obvious would be some signal, or logistical support units.

I will advise you not to go 92Y unless clerical work is something you enjoy. Also, the job requires a lot of attention to detail. Being slack on the accountability side of things will become expensive for you, or your commander. Either way, it doesn't work to your benefit. Your job is to protect your CDR, XO, and 1SG. Above all is your CDR. Obviously protect yourself and whoever is under you in the office. You have to like inventories and paperwork. It is a fast paced environment. Multitask. Sadly very few NCOICs are good leaders, usually they delegate everything. It depends on your unit but my personal experience I had to do the work of the NCOIC and 2 supply clerks by myself as a PFC (my unit deployed). You deal with higher ups in BN & BDE all the time. Also you work with civilians on post. Attention to detail is a must. Knowing your regulations because that’s how you protect yourself & CDR. Know how to handle stress. If do go this route remember to take notes of everything. You will thank yourself later. You can get really great jobs after the military with a 92Y experience. If you have people skills you will be fine. Lmk if you have any questions I could help you with. Good luck. It’s one that in order to be considered great at it you need to step up and not wait to be told things. Protect your commander assist others when you can and if you don’t know find someone who does. I did supply for over 12 years it’s what you make of it try to get to different types of units for the experience of dealing with different equipment and it builds up your resources. Having nothing and making something happen with the help of other fellow Yankees.
Also being self sufficient and forced to get into the regs because you are the SME.
Negatives, It can be stressful at times depending on the optempo and leadership. I just PCSd recently and its a minor challenge due to Non-Supply personnel running the supply room before me.

As far as deployments it depends on the unit. Alot of “deployments” nowadays are just overseas tours with the same length or less than an actual combat one. I was in an Air Defense unit at Bliss previously and they deployed seemed like every year and a half.

I agree that your job is protecting the Commander, protect yourself in the process. Some leaders will throw you under the bus without thinking twice so look out for yourself.

And always remember “In God we trust, all others must sign” WO1 Private RallyPoint Member Fri, 04 May 2018 19:04:00 -0400 2018-05-04T19:04:00-04:00 Response by SFC Private RallyPoint Member made May 17 at 2018 10:58 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-are-the-positives-and-negatives-of-being-a-92y-what-are-the-best-and-worst-duty-stations-what-duty-stations-are-in-need-of-a-92y?n=3637693&urlhash=3637693

The plus is when you attain rank, it opens up another world. You will now be the subject matter expert. But, learn every aspect of the job as you grow. Don't cut corners. Truly, I have no worst comments to make. Like all MOS's, it is what you make of it. Always do your best work. Learn to mentor others. It is rewarding and you will also learn along the way. Gain the trust of your commander and 1SG. A supply SGT that truly "takes care" of soldiers, can make or break the moral of a unit. Think of the worst unit you were in, how you were treated an felt. Then, think of how you would change things to make it a better unit. I served 22 AD and 6 reserve. I truly enjoyed the 92Y MOS. Plan for your future, do online courses, if possible attend attain higher education. There are many jobs in the logistic field in the civilian world, as well as contract workers. BUT, you must reach the skill level they are looking for. Become a SSG (min), strive for SFC. Keep your eye on the ball and you will make it. Everything that falls out you are accountable for. Positives are, if you are squared away and self motivated the job is easy which leads me to my next point... it can be a little monotonous and boring. Go Airborne and pray you get 7TH or 10TH group. Sadly, 92Ys don't realize the MOS's where soldiers are totally different and don't have to oversee, and take care of many things accept themselves and don't know important business process and battle rhythms that are different everyday like for Yankees. This ends up being a pitfall to good 92Ys, because of the clash or personalities resulting in more stress and lack of team work. Which, depending where you are in the Army again, team work is more prevalent in some places than others. I imagine you are lucky if your on a good post or actually in a Quartermaster Unit. I have been on assignments where I am the only full timer as a 92Y and the only full time soldier in uniform. Since I like working on projects as a team, and not delegating everything, it is really difficult SGT Private RallyPoint Member Thu, 08 Nov 2018 07:39:21 -0500 2018-11-08T07:39:21-05:00 2018-04-30T00:09:45-04:00
