What are the most significant traits of successful leaders?

I just read an interesting article by Lou Adler, "Do You Possess the Big Five Traits of Success?"

Of these five traits, which do you find most important?

1. Passion: a love for the work you’re doing.
2. Talent: the ability to do outstanding work.
3. Team Skills: the ability to influence, organize, develop, lead and cooperate with others.
4. Thinking: the ability to apply a person’s SKAs for planning, problem solving, seeing out of the box and decision making.
5. Perseverance: the fortitude and commitment to get the job done regardless of the circumstances.

I believe it would have to be an individuals perseverance the fortitude and commitment to get the job done regardless of the circumstances. If they have this everything else will just fall in to place . You will do your best to develop the talent through perseverance. Obviously your persistence in going forward shows the passion you have for it, and also shows that you have the right mindset to accomplish a task of that caliber.

Team skills; that is what we do daily. The ability to recognize the need to organize, task, and exploit talent in those we lead. Also, recognizing that WE are a part of the team. We may not necessarily always be the highlight of the task, but our input (big or small) is vital to its success

Chief, those are all traits we should have as a leader, and look for in future leaders. However, I firmly believe that character is the most important trait of leadership.

Of those choices, I would choose passion, hands down. With passion will come desire to excel, deserve to serve, integrity, and every other tool you need IOT be successful as a Leader. I was fortunate to love 99 out of every 100 days for my 22 years, and the dwindling passion was the main reason that I pulled my reserve and slipped off into retirement.
