What are the challenges of having children in the military on active duty?

My partner and I are discussing at what point would be a good time in our marriage to have children. I know a couple of officers who have 9 children and I know a couple of retired senior NCOs with 2 children. Both couples have served on active duty. My partner and I are trying to retire from active duty. We are both in the Army.

As a USO Volunteer I’ve seen all rank & file with kids. Some have a lot, some only 1 or 2. My uncle was active duty/career through the late 50’s thru the late 70’s. They had two sons - both who also went career Army. One has 2 daughters now in their 20’s & my other cousin 3 kids in their 20’s as well. I think you just have to be ready yourselves & if/when you have kids it’s more about helping them through the PCS’s and lifestyle.

If you are at an age where you can retire, have a civilian carerr, and still have kids that’s awesome too. My one cousin never left the states, the other was in Moscow for 2 or 3 years when his daughters were in elementary school.
