Generally, all National Guard and Reserve members discharged or released under conditions that are not dishonorable are eligible for some VA benefits. The length of your service, service commitment and/or your duty status may determine your eligibility for specific benefits.

Eligibility requirements for several VA benefits include a certain length of active service. Active service in the National Guard or Reserve includes:
» Active duty (Title 10) - full-time duty in the Armed Forces, such as unit deployment during war, including travel to and from such duty, except active duty for training, OR
» Full-time National Guard duty (Title 32) – duty performed for which you are entitled to receive pay from the Federal government, such as responding to a national emergency or performing duties as an Active Guard Reserve (AGR) member.

During this two to four year course, you'll be paired with and mentored by a unit officer. In some instances you will be the acting platoon leader of a real platoon. You would also benefit in pay. If you are SMP you get your ROTC stipend (350-500), drill pay at E-5 rate (350-500), and your GI bill (approximately +/- $380). That's over $1K a month to participate in ROTC and go to class. To put icing on the cake, your time in service will get you paid at a higher rate. Base pay for a 2LT with zero time in service is ($3,107.70/mo). Base pay for 2LT with over 2 years is ($3,234.90), +3 ($3910.20). Bottom line, you'll be making about $10k more a year than your non-prior service counterparts upon coming on active duty.

Six years that qualify as 'good' years for retirement qualifies for VA loans on home mortgages. Two of my siblings missed it even though they were in for a six year enlistment. Don't short that!

Benefits AFTER? Can you be more specific? Most benefits you’re entitled to happen during service. You’re about to receive a free education. Purchase TriCare while you are in college, it saves you over a thousand a year and teaches you how to maintain responsibility of your personal health. You’re going to receive a large stipend to go to school and a monthly paycheck at Drill.

Benefits after service depend on what happens during your career. If you stay info 6 years and don’t deploy or serve on Title 10 or Title 32 you are eligible for certain levels of TriCare. You have no college debt.

If youdeploy you are eligible for Veterans benefits. You earn retirement either way and with the new blended retirement system you can transfer your contributions if you leave the Guard.

You get to start a life and a career while still serving. SMP great choice and And competitive. Do it!
