What are some tips you could share that you have picked up over your time being self employed?

1. Carry Insurance or get Bonded.
2. Incorporate if possible - LLC is relatively cheap and a good way to protect your personal assets and not tie them into your business.
3. Lease your work associated vehicles for easier replacement as needed.
4. Keep very accurate records for taxes if you use your home as an office.

I'm not out yet but I'm excited to see what this topic is going to reveal! I've often thought of going to work for myself when I retire.

That very much depends on the type of career or service you intend on offering. My advice would be more the strategic and soft skills since I have been self employed in Europe since 1996, working as a consultant, turnaround specialist and also had 3 bars and a club in Berlin, Germany.
If you have specific questions I have many, many ideas and answers. My passion is helping Veterans be successful, sometimes hiring them into a position or providing them with contacts to other companies.
Whatever you decide remember one very critical point that belongs in your daily Mantra:
