The Success of the Navy against the British during the War of 1812. The Civil War Blockade of the Confederacy. The Spanish American War, particularly in the Pacific/Philippines. Last would be their contribution to our success in WWII.

That would be my pick for the big events. They defeated the Japanese Navy in a series of decisive battles (Midway, Leyte Gulf, etc.) and provided essential support to Allied ground forces in Europe and the Pacific.

In pivotal impact to this country, I would say the crucial part they played in the Revolutionary War despite going up against the 800lb gorilla of the time. Without some key victories or supporting roles (Lake Champlain, Yorktown, etc.) it's likely the outcome would have been much different for the United States. COL Randall C. Yeah I know that's more modern so...

How about its absolute unit of crazy badassery during the Revolutionary War, or that the USS Constitution was never defeated in battle, and reigns today as one of the world's oldest ships still in commission. One of my cooler discoveries upon visiting the ship itself was seeing a plaque of previous officers, and the 1st Commandant of the Marine Corps was also the first person to command the USS Constitution.
