What are some ideas for hobbies I could get into at Fort Polk, instead of PT or camping/hiking?

I like the education suggestion since there don't seem to be a lot of distractions there for you. Also find out if the base has a garden area, maybe you would like to grow something. Volunteer! Boy Scouts, Food Drives, Library, etc. Check MWR for concerts, tours

There’s an amateur radio club in Leesville that I am a part of. It’s a pretty fun hobby. We also do the Ham radio license testing. Look up West Central Louisiana Amateur Radio Club on Facebook for more Information or you can send me a message.

Buy a fishing pole and find a local to guide you. Watch out for the cottonmouths.
ATVs are a big thing here in the dirty south also.

I try to never advise young soldiers to spend money...but having been a two time Fort Polk survivor id recommend getting into the outdoors as much as possible. Louisiana is a natural wonder full of great people.

Toledo Bend has a US Army Recreation at the lake. You can rent a cabin and a boat and go fishing. You can go to the coast and fish there for what ever is running. I hunted in the winter and couched crawdads in the Spring. You can take up golf and visit the sights. The Rod & Gun Club can get you into target shooting. I loved Ft Polk, my wife hated the state period due to buys, snakes and scorpions.

Use whatever off time you get to travel. Beaches in South LA aren't great but they are better than nothing. 3 hours and change to Houston, a little further to Dallas or New Orleans. Long weekend, Florida is within driving distance. Other than that, you'll have to try hard to find things in the local area to grab your interest. I still don't love it here, but I make an effort to get away from the installation and actually do things to break up the time.

Been there once to see our Dad. So, don't know whats on base. Whats becoming very popular is pickleball. It's faster that tennis and almost as quick as racquetball.We play twice a week, and play 6-8 games. Good luck Spc.
