What are some good distributors out there for purchasing affordable camping and hiking equipment?

I have always been an avid outdoorsman and I am always interested in broadening my knowledge on camping and hiking. I feel that being an outdoors person is a way of life and that the ability to obtain good affordable equipment is essential. I have tried purchasing new and used—but I have a hard time finding equipment to add to my inventory—that is cost effective. Any suggestions? I am the type of person that always brings to much or not enough. I know that inventory depends on how long and where you are going, but is there anything else one should take in consideration?

I love REI, not only are the prices decent, but after you try it and decide you don't like it, you can return it (up to a year, I believe). If you join, you also get a check every year that you can use on equipment or for cash. It is a great company!

I would say either REI or Dicks Sporting. I lead a pack of Cub Scouts and have found that I could get most of the essentials at either place. I would also recommend Amazon if you're looking for a specific item you might find a good deal.

REI hands down. Their return policy is amazing and the check at the end of the year is an added bonus. Eastern Mountain Sports is also worth a look if you're in the Northeast, and don't forget all the great little gear shops you find around ski towns and national parks.
