There was such a fast growth in technology in the last couple generations that made most facets of life so much easier/lazier, and the next generation only knows what they are born into. Grandpa had to farm driving a tractor manually and without an enclosed cab. Grandson farms with a tractor with GPS auto-pilot and HVAC. A hard day's work is now quite subjective, depending on your age and generation.Response by PFC Al Sethre made Aug 19 at 2016 12:35 PM2016-08-19T12:35:55-04:002016-08-19T12:35:55-04:00AA Joseph Moody1820299<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>First off to say something in all fairness every generation since there has been civilization has been saying "Where did the society I know as a kid go" With every year we get advances in technology, changes in law and culture and in some of those cases the changes to law and culture I think has been as large of an agent of chance as the changes in technology.<br /><br />And now that that is out of the way, I do think that in recent years there has been some change enacted by people with good intentions and biased judgement that has done far more harm than good in society. <br />If I had to make a personal list I would say that the no child left behind policies have done quite a bit to lower the educational standards and more importantly the character standards in our country, All things considered you get two things from your school career, one of them is a basic grasp on the skills society expects people to have and the other is character growth, A kid who struggles for 10 years to bring home C's is also a kid who knows how to apply themselves and will understand their limitations when it is time to make life plans. And from personal experience one of the most character building moments I had in high school was when I failed Alg-2, Every day for the following year I had a space of 70 minutes a day where I considered the woes of not doing what I need to do to pass that class the first time, and you know what? That is a basic life skill that I am glad I learned when I was 17.<br /><br />I'm sure there is quite a few other things on the list, but one of the most critical life skills that a country needs it's people to have is the ability to be self critical.Response by AA Joseph Moody made Aug 19 at 2016 4:00 PM2016-08-19T16:00:39-04:002016-08-19T16:00:39-04:00SGT Jimmy Carpenter1820419<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Liberals ruined everything.Response by SGT Jimmy Carpenter made Aug 19 at 2016 4:52 PM2016-08-19T16:52:54-04:002016-08-19T16:52:54-04:00SSG Carlos Madden1820477<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Do you mind elaborating on what you mean when you say "used to be a society that knew we had to earn everything and we no longer do?"Response by SSG Carlos Madden made Aug 19 at 2016 5:16 PM2016-08-19T17:16:49-04:002016-08-19T17:16:49-04:00Pat McCracken1823524<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Spare the rod, spoil the child! I agree with SSG Follin, too. With parents I work with at school, a huge portion of them are too lax with discipline....they don't want to hurt their child's feeling or they give in because they don't want to deal with the conflict. Our welfare system has helped create entitlement. Able-bodied men and women can make more money reproducing. I could go on and on, but I get really frustrated.Response by Pat McCracken made Aug 21 at 2016 1:18 AM2016-08-21T01:18:21-04:002016-08-21T01:18:21-04:00SCPO Private RallyPoint Member1824090<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>We, the great post-WWII American society, became the Hippie-Free-Love-Yuppie-Gimme-Uber-Entitlement society of the 1960s through today. Those values were instilled in me as a child and there are very few things I own that I can call a gift because everything I own I bought through my heard work and effort.
