Gov. Scott Walker has signed a bill that makes lying about military service a crime.

The Republican bill makes falsely claiming military service or a military award a misdemeanor punishable by up to nine months in jail and $10,000 in fines.

If someone makes those claims intending to commit or aid another crime he or she would be guilty of a felony punishable by up to six years in prison and $10,000 in fines.

Walker signed the bill Wednesday.

The Assembly passed the measure in April. The Senate followed suit in May.

I'd only ask that our service members don't go vigilante on this stuff. Stolen valor is an issue but keep cool when dealing with it.

Many times it was the troops that make a shirt or bath robe up for him. Wish I could have seen one of his shows. We were so far out, there were no shows provided, just cans of old movies. Much later on Adak we did get "B Circuit" stuff like no-name bands and, wait for it, Huston Oiler Cheerleaders.

I have been on my motorcycle and had someone accuse me of being a "wanna be" soldier. You see, I wear the American Legion Riders patch, along with ARMY above it. I actually had to pull out my VA card to show that I was a vet.
Sadly, some people take it too far.

* This is a complete non-issue. Anyone who has ever served can spot a fake in about 30 seconds, and should take appropriate action. Perhaps someone should ask Gov. Walker to do something about the homeless, jobless vets in his state instead of wasting time on asshats and pogues

I agree completely it isn't a problem to spot a fake. But something has to be done about the vets who once out of service are left with nothing. They need our help more than anyone else

We can spot them, but most civilians can't. This law would provide punishment for thieves trying to receive special benefits from places like restaurants and retailers.

Most homeless people want to be homeless. Just because you are a veteran does not give you special dispensation. Take a look at all the EBT's, Section 8 housing, free cell phones nd the list goes on. If they are mentally ill as a result of military service send them to the VA. I had a legless bum in Atlanta that saw my cap with the CIB and Purple heart say "Hey, help a fellow veteran?" I told his arse to go to the VA.

A much more effective approach to dealing with Solen Valor situations is to 1) Have SV designated as a type of mental illness by the mental health community 2) Have states allow police and magistrates to commit people accused of SV to a mental facility for 72 hours observation. It would be a much stronger deterent to a person if local LE could take them for a mental evaluation rather than depend on the feds to investigate and charge someone with a felony for something that is quite often a symptom of mental illness. Very few of these cases ever go forward and attention people get - even from being called out - is what they crave. What they need is treatment before their fantasies take them further down the road to mental instability.

I got two down votes as well. While people think that making a law against something will automatically compel compliance, it is often the opposite. The current methods of 'calling out' people and uploading videos of the incidents can now actually result in charges against the person doing the calling out. Now if you suspect an SV case, you will have to report it to police to handle. You want to video it and upload it to Youtube? Expect to have your phone seized and placed in evidence for forensics to retrieve the video. Expect to go to court and testify. Are people really willing to follow it through? Maybe - once. Just want to call someone out and not report it? Better check to make sure you won't get charged for failure to report a felony. I am fully in favor of prosecution of SV incidents, but I recognize that passing a law isn't going to have the effect that most people would think it would. Even if a person is arrested, judges and prosecuters are unlikely to allow a case to go forward and if they do there are a host of defenses that a person can use. This is why I think the law should be enforced at the municipal, county, and state levels where individuals can be weeded out, sent for mental health screening, deterred from committing SV in the first place, and the big fish identified and properly prosecuted.

I agree- I've never run into an SV situation but from what I see in videos it honestly looks like many of the people doing this are mentally ill or handicapped- I don' think many of them know what they are doing isn't appropriate.

Good for Governor Walker, and good for Wisconsin. I hope other States follow suit! Enforcement may be somewhat cumbersome, so I would think this would end up ferreting out at least some of the more blatant fakes, but the ordinary bar room-ranger will probably get mostly overlooked.

I think this is a good idea. Recently I was at Lowes and I asked them if there is a Military Veteran Discount. They said yea and took 10% off my purchase. I asked the clerk "aren't you going to ask to see my VA Card?" She didn't know she could ask. I think if you get more and more people asking to see Veteran IDs or State IDs with veteran on it, you might see a drop in poserS

I work at Lowes. I always ask and if a valid ID can't be produced, they don't get the discount. I've made some civilians and contractors mad too.

The lowes near my home asked me to register as a veteran. Every lowes I go to asks for my phone number and they look me up before applying a discount

Didn't the current president promiss the American people transparency. His cabinet, and others that surround him have attempted, by any means possible, to cover up their involvement in so many instances it would be nearly impossible to list here. Maybe you should leave the transparency issue alone.

The worst thing Walker has done is get rid of the unions for public employees. That is enough. Unions are still very much needed! They check corporate managers from cheating employees in many ways. Unions provide a private sector means of checks and balances. In Wisconsin public employees are at the governor's mercy and he doesn't have any.
Anti-trust laws do nothing for employees. They aren't doing much for consumers. Recently, Safeway and Albertson's were allowed to merge. That eliminates competition, which lets the new mega-chain raise prices, which hurts consumers.
Sargent I think you need to brush up on your econ.
