I recently applied for VRE Ch 31. Choose the Self Employment Tract and was denied. In the denial letter it states that I have to provide medical evidence that explains the limitations affecting my employability. Which arose from the effects of my service connected disability(ies), which are so severe as to necessitate selection of self employment as the only reasonable feasible vocational goal.
My question is, what is considered severe? And what do I have to do to qualify?

I am a Vet living in Melb Fl. I have had Cardiac care at Viera Veterens hospital for 4 years. Now I need a heart transplant and was told my Viera Va cannot do it because the Tri West Insurance contract has ended. They cannot get me on the Shands transplant list. If I want/need care I must move to Virginia. Move there with a care support team. I am single with no family. I cannot get civilian Insurance until the window opens in November. Can anyone help?

Been my experience that the vast majority of employers including the Federal Government not only don’t give a damn about our service but penalize us for it. I hold 2 degrees served in the military from 1987 to 2008 (broken service no retirement) even volunteered to go to Iraq and going after being out for years. This country/ our government and its private sector employers could care less about us. I’ve been out of work for 6 + months after the accounting firm I worked at was sold. Not a single damn job offer in 6 months. Used to be proud of my service, not anymore.

Good afternoon everyone, I am a disabled veteran who has always wanted to work in the Information Technology field. After deploying to Iraq, I studied to be a teacher for K-12 in Technology and Engineering (B.S.) and I followed that up with a M.S. in Special Education. My question is, with someone that has over 10 years of experience from the military in the field, indirectly, what do you suggest a veteran should do to better present this information to prospective employers? I'm a 70% service-connected disabled veteran, lost my job because of COVID here in New York, and have been collecting since March. I want to work. I think there are benefits and incentives for potential employers to hire me, what are they? And do you recommend me mentioning this to employers when reaching out to them, say for example in a cover letter possibly saying something along the lines "if you hire me there are potential tax break benefits and I can help you apply for them" ?

I’m near Fort Hood. I’m a disabled veteran and a Master Plumber with other skills of about 40 years in the construction trades. Yes. There is no stand-alone BBQ restaurant in this area of about 25,000. In doing due diligence, I've found BBQ restaurants are the #1 failure rate of nearly all business starts. Should I let that be my clue to not consider such an enterprise? I have an ideal location in mind, with high traffic. Dickeys BBQ (franchise) had announced they were coming here, then that fell through.

I'm within ten years of ceasing my full time work maybe even five years. My military specialty was technical (AG) and my civilian education is also technical (BSEET). I had an experience that I hope no other veteran would have to endure when I went to my local VR&E. I was first told that my career path of law was not good for my service connected health issues. I then was told that I should start a computer science degree. I was asked by my counselor to find what computer I needed for school. I submitted my request for computer and did not receive a denial until my semester was almost over. With out getting into more personal matters I am no longer wanting to continue my education. Mainly based on the way the VR&E counselor treated the veterans he was suppose to be assisting. So what am I able to do now? The same counselor laughed at me when I said I was interested in starting my own business. Is that a thing? Does VR&E in Tyler Texas deny all of the business requests? I am 100% P&T unemployed and no one will hire me. I don't mind being at home with my children but I believe I could do something.

I a I am a Vet with 40% service connected disability. I am currently about half way through culinary school, and have a dream/ goal of opening a business that teaches children how to cook when they need to, Jr Cooking Academy of sorts. Many kids attend martial arts, scouts, gymnastics, etc each week, this would be structured like that, building on last sessions skills.

I applied for VocRehab back in November 2018 and was approved for the self employment track. Now it is late July 2020 and I am still going through the process. Eventually they came back and only said they cover a computer and an online class for my business. They are still dragging their feet on getting just those two approved.

The question is should it take that long?

What other programs is there to help disabled veterans start a business that help financially?

To: Gina Klaus - last year I retired from the Civil Service, about 2-3 years earlier than I'd anticipated. I waited a year for the situation to upright itself, and am now applying for jobs online, thru USAJOBS. It seems every entity or organization either has a different set of questions or asks the same question in a different manner. It's very confusing - even as a former HR Director. Certainly, I'd like to get back into the federal workforce, but it's difficult too. At last count, I've submitted at least 350 applications, have been referred 70 times, and have gotten three (3) interviews since beginning in mid-June. Any suggestions? I'm using my Vet (5-Point) Preference - as well as the fact I can apply and be rehired as a former GS-employee with Competitive/Career Status - but I really feel as though I'm "barking-up-the-wrong-tree." Any suggestions? Generally, I'm not easily flustered or frustrated but...this is really getting me down - especially in light of the ongoing pandemic situation worldwide.

Two things are apparent in this equation: 1) I can't get to a VA Hospital to get reevaluated for my physical condition based on 15+ years of military service (COVID-19 Shutdown); 2) I'm drawing a monthly check from SSA and OPM, each, respectively. It's not enough to pay the bills. I need to work. I'll take a GS-09 position if they'll let me bring my Family, and reimburse our Travel/Transportation costs. All I'm looking for is "peace of mind" and I haven't had it since my former organization paved-the-way to me retiring in June 2019.

We opened a small business so my husband could be cared for while we still earned a good living. Can’t imagine any greater gift than being self supporting if you’re disabled or their caregiver. For many years we didn’t have to depend on VA Disablity

Robyn Trulock, CPT Bankston-Carter: I used my Vocational Rehabilitation benefit around 8 years ago. At the tome I was rated at 70%. Since then my rating has been increased to 100% P&T. I have also found that I can not work in an office environment. My original Voc Rehab was for Drafting, which requires office work, and the arm movements cause severe pain in my shoulders (both of which are service connected). I would like to start my own business, but I would need to attend school and buy several thousand dollars worth of equipment. Is there a way to do that through either program? Thank you.

I am a Veteran/entrepreneur who have spent recent years providing Computers and Cell Phones User Training to Senior Citizens. I even started my own non-profit so that I could include Social and Employment technical skills training to Veterans. However, I couldn't ever find any grants or funding so that I could offer my services in person or virtually at no cost to Veterans. I am licensed in my city and county as a Veteran. However, and especially now with Covid-19 requiring everyone to use Technology, I desperately need help finding the ways and means of getting theses essential services to Veterans and Senior Citizens. So please help me help this technically vulnerable groups of American Citizens from being left behind.

I am a general contractor in Fort Lauderdale Florida. I do SAH grants from the VA, I am caps certified which is certified aging in place specialist. Someone gets hurt, I make their house livable, handicap ramps, grab bars. Widen doors. I did work for an Army veteran 100% disabled on an SAH grant to remodel his entire house and property. Good afternoon. I am a 30% disabled veteran with a BS in Business Administration and Human Resources Management who has applied for and subsequently been referred as best qualified for 3 vacancies which all closed in May 2020 (101EDU-20-KSP-10805024(NBU)/101OTED-10812285-DA-NBU/CASK-10808399-20-TS). I am currently unemployed as a result of COVID-19. I have been laser focused in my search for new employment. I have emailed the agency/HR Specialist on the announcements and/or called only to receive no response. If I am able to reach someone on the telephone I am told they don't have access to that information and the last communication they have is from May 15, 2020 and thus they are unable to answer questions. I am interested in the status of the certificate (extended/position filled/interview have begun, etc.) I note VA has indicated they have made great strides in streamlining their hiring process. I am unclear as to why it has been so difficult to obtain my candidacy for these positions. I have also contacted the VA Program Office for Veterans and they are unable to assist me. Any assistance/guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Additionally, I have 47 applications pending on USAJOBS, with 17 best qualified referrals. Thank you.

I suppose anyone could answer this, I am a recent graduate in the California Bay Area (Kinesiology, with a focus in therapeutic studies and a minor is biology). I am also a disabled veteran going through PTSD treatment at the VA and other service connect disability issues. I am struggling to find a job (working with VOC Rehab) that will utilize me education, but also be accommodating of my ongoing health issues and mental health treatment. Can you provide any advice or known resources that could help someone in my situation. (70% disabled and currently being reevaluated)

How do I direct my question to the Hire a Vet participants? I am an owner/operator of an Income Tax business and looking to retire. I have been unable to break through the red tape to find individual candidates that I could train to take over my business. It is always "How many jobs are you hiring for, what are the benefits and what is the starting date." That is not my situation. How do I find assistance to this issue?

SP5 Scott Denniston - I'm looking to start a dog grooming business with my wife (she's the groomer/trainer). We know some money will be needed to get started and mostly from a loan. We were thinking of doing is at home (she'd have her salon and dog training there) so as to save on paying a lease on a space somewhere. Ms. @abby malchow, does Amazon have dedicated Veteran recruiters? I worked as a 92A managing the supply operations at Midway airport, Chicago, alongside now Sen. Duckworth, and I can never seem to get in contact with a recruiter no matter how many times I reach out or apply to positions labeled as Veteran friendly, even with a wealth of experience. What advice would you give veterans to allow them to get noticed?

There is tremendous stigma attached to disabled Veterans, particularly those with PTSD. Hostile environments are created by co-workers, who don't feel comfortable being around "crazy people". Employers are only employing Veterans for the 50% preference. The Office of Civil Rights refuses to pursue legal action on behalf of disabled Veterans, preferring to allow employers to agree informally to remediate the situation, which only drives the hostility underground. Let's face it: employers don't want to have "crazy people" working for them either. Will VA consider creating an Office of Legal Assistance that will aggressively pursue legal action against employers, including DOD contractors, that permit hostile environments against disabled Veterans to flourish? Will VA consider creating public service announcements, film documentaries, and podcasts that tell the stories of disabled Veterans who have experienced hostile environments because of their disabilities?

My question is for the SBA.

I just started my small business when COVID-19 hit. I can begin to operate again safely, but other than the 2K I was given for employees, which has been paid and is long gone, I have heard nothing about the $40K I requested, which would have made my business fully operational in this environment.

I have however, heard of millions going to very large organizations with political connections. Can you explain the difference between what we're seeing in the news and what's going on, if there is a difference? And also help me understand if I should just give up on this application I made in March?

I currently am in VRE but close to 10 years ago I was also a GS worker. I was an employee as a Mil-Tech with over 3 years and have 'permanent' marked on my SF-50. I held my last grade for over a year. How can re-enter the GS system again and work for maybe the VA? Or should I complete the VRE program?

I was working as an electrician in construction so I was also thinking of starting my own company but instead of doing the work because of my mil related injures, I would work the office and supervisor So two things I'm interested in.

I am a full time student and I would like to know of any grants for starting my 501(c)(3) and the steps to successfully get all the legal paperwork sent to the state. Any guidance is appreciated. I am a veteran and do have work, but I feel that I cannot advance my current position at my job because I do not have a competitive advantage. I have a four year degree and half way through my masters for which all was paid through post 9/11 GI bill. But now, that has exhausted and I turn to the VA Vocational Rehabilitation because I do not have the funding to finish my graduate degree. Hello Gina Klaus,

I have a MS degree in Data Science. I did not use it directly because I opened a small business that was focused on education, which is now restricted due to the current situation. Are you aware of any Data Science types of jobs in the VA that can be done remotely?

I'm a 30% disabled U.S. Army Veteran who opened a small business January of 2019. While I was poised to have my biggest sustainable levels of income in March, exceeding my business plan expectations by more than twelve months, COVID shut down the majority of my clients' businesses and slashed my revenue by over 80%. I'm rapidly approaching a point where I need to make a decision, shut down my business and seek regular employment or grit my teeth through an uncertain future and try to re-establish myself, and I would like to know more about Hiring Our Heroes. Is it just a means for employers to hire full-time employees, or is also a viable place for me to seek professional work through my Digital Marketing Agency?

2 tours of duty mar 1993 during war time. when i got back they told me to check in with my local VA. A man i didn't know had me fill out some paper work.1 question asked if I was republican or dem. I skipped it because I wasn't sure. he made me pick one. so i asked what are you? Dem. he replied so i wrote republican and said thanks, any one who makes me commit to something i know nothing about isn't my friend and i want nothing to do with them. no one told me i was suppose to suck his dick. He told me I had no right to make informed decisions!!!!! I have no right to anything. even my social security is gone. broken jaw, broken toes, feet toast, back hamburger, burned and blown-up twice. I personally pulled, very close to, 100 civilians and soldiers of every branch of service except marines, I have to give them that. my medical training tells me it's too late. the 3 turmors in me are not any concern to any VA. what about my broken hand? that was in november when are we going to look at that? I have to go the feed store called, my medical supplies are in.. no laws no rights no americans to be found.

My name is Lloyd “Kenny” Wiggins, and I am an almost 60-year-old NAVY Veteran. I have been in uniform my entire adult life and am now nearing retirement - permanent retirement. I joined the Navy in 1979 and discharged in 1993, at which time I returned to my hometown and became employed with a local small business here. I eventually gained employment with a company as a security officer and stayed with that until 1995 when I gained employment with my home county Sheriff’s Office and have been here ever since. I am looking to retire from the Sheriff’s Office but will need other work when I do. As a small agency, we have no retirement. I have a little money in stock but not enough. My problem is that no one wants to look at an old Salt who doesn’t know anything outside of public service. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice (with a concentration in Organizational Law Enforcement Leadership) and have only four semesters left. I am looking for suggestions and leads regarding who might want to take a chance on this old War Horse. My resume is available upon request. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Is there any jobs available in the San Luis Valley, CO? I was so gracious to have help from the VA getting my degrees. I have a BA and MA in special education. However, I don't have a job. Anything will do. Thanks!
