An unidentified female Navy Officer, staying at an upscale NYC hotel with family while visiting during Fleet Week festivities last week was taken aback when her group was stopped by bouncers and prevented from entering the hotel's bar one evening. At first, nobody could figure it out, everyone was dressed in professional attire; until the bouncer's indicated that the Officer's Class A Uniform did not fit it's criteria for female dress, and they weren't backing down. How about it? How would you address such an insulting situation?

I was turned away at the New Sano Hotel in Tokyo. I was wearing a sweater. But that was in 1985. That was in the restaurant.

Management agreed that this was a training issue and the bouncer was in error. Failing to inform management of this training oversight meant that others would similarly be negatively treated by an erroneous interpretation of the standards.

I ran into a somewhat similar situation once at a bar in downtown San Diego. The doorman asked for ID, and my friend and I produced our military ID's. The doorman refused us entry because "he didn't know how to tell if military ID's were fake or not."

Please note this was a bar I was a regular at, and the doorman was on his first night. I asked to speak with the manager right away. In fact I asked for him by name. He came out and said "John, what's the problem?" I said "Ask your bouncer. He won't let me and Rob in with military ID's."

The manager let us in and in fact told the doorman that he wouldn't be needing his services again after that night. I wouldn't say I got him fired per say as he was an employee of a temp agency and not the bar.

Not sure what a Class A Uniform is (never heard of this in the Navy) or the equivalent Navy uniform but if they were in any uniform besides NWUs (Navy Working Uniform) they would have been authorized to drink. Either way shame on them for turning a Service Member away period for being in uniform.

Talk to friends and fellow service members about establishment and have an "unofficial" off limits to not only the bar/restaurant but the hotel as well. Establish a boycott with Service Members and families of service members. Post bad reviews on the website. Just a few off the top of my head.

I can relate to this situation. I was asked to leave a bar because I was wearing a kilt.
I asked for the manager and the manager straightened it all out.
I was allowed to stay with my group of friends at the bar as a kilt is considered proper clothing.

See what happens, and if manager doesn't apologize immediately, post the name of the hotel on every social media account you own - including this one - with a very polite and factual explanation that says "XXX hotel does not permit U..S. military officers, in uniform, in the restaurant." I have run into this situation before both in the US and overseas. When it was pointed out to Management that our Uniform both officer and enlisted) WAS in fact the same as their equivalent of formal dress, Management QUICKLY relented. Especially when it was pointed out that the place would be place Off Limits to ALL Military Personnel.

The best/worst example of this was in Monaco at the Casino. Management was going to let in officers because their Summer Dress Uniform at that time included a tie, while the Enlisted uniform included only a neckerchief. As soon as it was explained that NO Sailor, Officer, Enlisted, or ANY Navy would be allowed to enter the Casino and that the Off Limits Designation would extend to ALL Allied Forces, USN Enlisted Sailors were welcomed with open arms. BTW - 1968 and NEVER again.

I would inform the manager that I was no longer interested in his/her establishment and make sure that signage was posted on every ship tied up that week that military members were not allowed in this establishment. In uniform or not. At that point the Marines would probably launch a recon mission...

I don't expect everyone to understand us military people and I'm rarely disapppointed. A bouncer is not a high paying position and thus when left to represent an organization (this hotel's bar) it shows the management made a serious judgement error to place their brand name and dress-code decision-making ability in the hands of their bouncer. Simple as that. I'm sure the negative publicity hurt them.

We have an obligation to fight this sort of treatment (ask for the manager) or we risk being brushed aside. My 2 cents.

The article didn't elaborate what the dress code for women was so I'm still confused. A Class A uniform is as dignified as a business suit but since the bouncer was specific to women standards does this mean their code requires women to wear a dress or skirt? I think I'm with the majority here, I would have politely asked to speak to the manager on duty. Stated my request to be seated. If at that point, I had been given any indication that things were going south. We would have left. I would have contacted the corporate hedquarters, if I still had not received an apology or some sort of resolution. Yeah, you bet I would have shown some media attention as well! I would say ask to see the management,and if that didn't work then leave and go elsewhere without making a scene. A couple of other folks have basically said the same thing. Try to point out and correct the error,but don't make a scene as you are in uniform and are representing all service members at that point. Inquire WHY it doesn't meet code. Is it considered "work clothes", which it is, then ask to see the manager for a waiver. As a Navy officer, you are required to conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times, especially when in uniform. I don't believe walking away would solve the issue at hand and others may find themselves in the same situation, but may not be inclined to react in such a way. I feel that the best course of action would be to ask for the manager in order to see if exceptions may be made in the future. If the manager in noncompliant then I would suggest walking away.

1. Why does the officer go to a bar in uniform to drink? I am enlist so I do not about officer, but to best of my knowledge, we are not allowed to even eat out in uniform in certain command, let alone drinking. The only exception to drinking in uniform is command function such as Balls.
2. Yes, the bouncer might be not properly trained. However, a lot of establishment do have dress code and it doesn't include military uniform.
3. 7% of people here think that causing a mild scene is actually an option? Where's the professional and military bearing? It's like demanding for discount at the mini mart.
4. Serving and wearing the uniform does not make me feel any special in civilian setting. So other than politely leave and go elsewhere, I strongly curious what the 11% think any other option is appropriate. I do not care what rank you are when I put my uniform down upon retirement or getting out. What on your collar device does not command anything to a manager. And if you are to speak to a manager, your only credential is just like any other civilian patrons. In which case, the manager will address the dress code policy. Life too short to complain. The fact that 62% think we entitled to an argument is baffling. We do our job, but no one owe us anything in civilian sectors.
5. Even if I was to entertain the idea that I was "enraged" by this incident. I would rather Politely leave and go elsewhere. Go buy that bar, then fire everyone and make it a sailor joint.

Ask the manger to show what there dress code requirements for there establishment is, and how the Navy's First class dress Uniform doe's not fall in line with there dress code. Then if they refuse to do so, Than the Officer than has the wright to file a discrimination complaint against the establishment. Or take it to internal affairs and have it put out to the media, and the public about that establishment, and how they treat our Brave Men and Women in Uniform who serve and protect the freedom of this country, So places like that have the freedom to operate. And to put a memo out to all Military personal to avoid that business and spend there hard earned dollars else ware, where they will be welcome. This actually happened to me in San Francisco, Ca in 1969 before deploying on my first tour in Vietnam. I was refused entry into a well known steak house while wearing full dress blues, their reasoning was based on that I wasn't wearing a coat and tie. I demanded to speak with the restaurant manager, he came outside and politely let me know he didn't care for military personnel coming into his establishment in uniform. I could come back in a suit and tie, and I in so many words told him what he could do (put his establishment where the sun doesn't shine) !

I returned to the base and went to the club to eat and partake in some well deserved cold beverage (Beer) . Every time we returned to the bay area I and my shipmates made it a point eat where we were welcomed. I boycott any and all business that take this type of stance towards our service men and women, and wont waste any time blogging their business'.

IMHO, I would not go to a bar dressed in uniform regardless of how many others are doing it. It gives the wrong impression and has the potential for negative consequences.

I would make sure the Command Officer knew the second i got back to base, then use to be a very strict no visit policy when i was stationed in Norfolk, imagine the loss of business for them to get on the list

I would take my hard earned money elsewhere. I would also send an email to the manager/ceo explaining the situation and if there was a larger bill I would maybe attach a receipt displaying lost funds and explain that you would be sharing this everyone that you knew and other veteran groups you are associated with.

Diplomacy is the best tact. Go somewhere else and then later report it to the manager. I am sure in the future there would be an equitable resolution with them and other businesses.

Anyone in military dress should not be turned away from anywhere they wish to go.

I may be biased, however, I believe military personnel automatically command, at the very least, a little respect if not a lot.

I would inform them that I was going to inform the DOD and all other military people I could that this happened and to not go to that bar, even if not in uniform. They let her stay in the hotel but would not allow her to enter the bar? I'd give them something to think about.

I think drinking in uniform is distasteful and attention seeking behavior. I get it, sometimes you get off work, go out to eat, and grab a beer with your dinner. That's cool.... but when you go into an establishment that primarily serves alcohol and are attempting to drink in your uniform, you are attention seeking in my opinion.

When I was in the Army, I was authorized to wear my uniform home going on leave, and a lot did, but I never did. Wearing a uniform in an airport when not on orders is something else I see as attention seeking behavior. Why would you even want to wear your uniform on your off time anyways?

Well this was fleet week, the hotel should have informed staff to make exception. Needless to say that hotel will no longer be getting any military business. At least from me and my family and friends.

This just shows how much our service is regarded by the corporate world. As the fellow in the article on Military.com put it "just steps from ground zero this should be a no-brainer." Add to this the fact that it was Fleet Week, a week where all of New York is geared up to honor the contributions of Navy members, and this bouncer was more than a moron.

Naval officers (USUALLY) don't "create scenes"! The ONLY acceptable means of resolving this issue is to DEMAND to speak with the bar manager! If he/she can't or wont see the offended person then I would march straight into the hotel general manager's office and not leave until the matter is resolved! The actions of the bouncers are totally inappropriate!

There are times to get up and raise some hell, but to cause a scene and imply unpatriotic behavior is not the way to go. Being patriotic means you stand up for others attitudes and opinions even if you don't agree with them. So you ask to speak to a manager, and lodge your protest that way. Sort of like in the service, you praise in public and condemn in private.

As distasteful as this is I don't believe any private enterprise should be forced to accommodate exceptions, so long as they are consistent on their practices. The hotel apologized, which is a step in the right direction for them making the change under their own volition. If they were forced to take her in that night this would most likely go the wrong way.

As a Navy veteran, I would have dug my heels deep. Stood my ground as a proud Sailor. Then, I would obtained the bouncer name and additional information. Then I would have gone to the national media. Recording a video is always a excellent choice to protect yourself. Why is there so much contempt for military personnel?

proof that the female uniform does not look good on females, but tends to make them look frumpy and unattractive... especially in summer whites. Maybe there should be a uniform cut and designed for a woman's body, just a suggestion...

My country is really starting to embarass me. Military dress should be acceptable EVERYWHERE! I can understandsagging pants, gang colors, and all other forms of inappropriate dress, but a military uniform. What a joke! I would never ever patronize that establishment again, and I would write a scathing letter to their corporate office shaming them for the manner in which they treat military personnel. How shameful

Shortly after WWII, my father and friends had a similar problem at an establishment that had posted, "Sailors and Dogs Not Allowed". After getting snubbed by the manager, my father's wealthy friend proceeded to buy the place and then fire the manager. He then immediately sold it back to the original owner. :D

Certain establishments have rules, and human beings are put there to enforce them. That doesn't mean they will always make rational decisions when trying to follow the rules to a T. I can give you some equally, if not MORE absurd rules that some ridiculous people in the military have went overboard on. On MCBH Kaneohe, they have a strict dress code for the exchange and commissary. No PT gear being one of the rules. Some marine decided that applied to an 8 year old boy wearing basketball shorts while with his mom trying to shop for groceries. Then on the other side of the island on Hickam, one of our planes got ahead of one of our others and used their landing approval instead of getting their own, so when the other one landed, out came Air Force security and made everyone exit the plane at gun point, including the crew and space A passengers. That's pretty standard protocol, and also the people on the plane are supposed to face away from the terminal. One man happened to be holding his two year old, and one of the E- nothings yelled at him to turn the two year old around so that he wasn't facing the terminal.

I wouldn't go to a club in uniform anyway. I thought only boot privates did that? Free drinks aren't worth it especially when you aren't supposed to be drinking in uniform anyways.

MAJ Paul Hoiland, I would ask to speak with a manager with witnesses. If admitted I would decline and take my friends, family and money somewhere else.... We can chose which establishments to spend money at because of these uniforms. They would not get one dime from me.

As a soldier she should have understood and went and changed. As a soldier she should have known better than to go into a bar while in uniform because while your in that uniform, especially your Class A's you are implying readiness for duty and the bar is the last place you should be. the bouncer in question was probably a former soldier, reservist, or even an off duty police officer and understood professional code of conduct.
