This MTOE has stripped us of this slot and my Readiness NCO(TECH)/Maintenance Control Supervisor(MDAY) are trying to figure out what regulation provides the Commander with the authority to appoint a Soldier the Additional Duty of Motor Sergeant. If you are familiar with Add. Duty memos you know they require an authority block with provides the specific regulatory guidance that grants that Commander the Authority to delegate a certain task to an individual. What is the AR that covers appointing a motor sergeant to a unit that isn't authorized one by MTOE? I appreciate your input in advance...Under what authority can the Commander appoint a Motor Sergeant?2014-10-15T17:06:35-04:00SSG Private RallyPoint Member279363

We are a NG Maintenance Company and up until FY15's MTOE have always had an E7 Motor Sergeant position in our company headquarters platoon. He can simply write the memo and it will be official. Now he also must provide the resources, time, and appropriate training and education for him/her to be successful.
In a separate additional duty, I recommend the commander appoint you as Research NCO for asking the good question - and hopefully getting even better answers!Response by LTC Jason Strickland made Oct 15 at 2014 5:11 PM2014-10-15T17:11:50-04:002014-10-15T17:11:50-04:00SFC Private RallyPoint Member279715

MTOE'd positions rarely have additional duty apointments. But this is what I was able to come up with:
DA PAM 750-1 chapter 2-3
In regards to responsibilities of maintenance personnel

2–3. Maintenance Soldiers and other support personnel
a. The commander must ensure that maintenance SOPs provide clear guidance to the maintenance platoon and
maintenance section. The size and capability of the internal maintenance operations may vary from command to
command, however roles of unit leaders, the unit equipment records clerk, and TAMMS clerk generally are common to
all organizations.
b. The commander or leader often finds that maintenance cells are small. Critical skills that are obtained from
formal training courses are often only possessed by a single individual at the unit level. In those cases where skills are
one deep, the commander or leader must ensure that multiple individuals are cross trained.
c. Some unit-level skilled positions in the modified table of organization and equipment (MTOE) require Soldiers to
undergo extensive training that identifies them with a three-character additional skill identifier code along with the
appropriate MOS code. Commanders will fully utilize these personnel in these positions.Response by SFC Private RallyPoint Member made Oct 15 at 2014 10:05 PM2014-10-15T22:05:13-04:002014-10-15T22:05:13-04:002014-10-15T17:06:35-04:00
