He wanted to maintain his professional appearance. Then he went and turned down a first class seat, where he could have had his coat hung by the same attendant.

I gotta throw out the BULLSHIT flag on this one. Unless he's never flown before - and I'm doubting that fiercely - he knew what the rules are when you fly coach. He could have made other choices in what he wore but he decided not to. Ergo, he was trying to get some special attention and used his uniform to get it. The flight attentdant, if following company policy, was correct to smack him down. I have never really had an issue getting them hung. I think once or twice I had to put it in the overhear, but I was able to lay them nice enough that they didn't get ruined in flight.

About the whole first class thing, it must be nice to be a male sm, or vet. No one really cares about females. I remember after Iraq all my male platoon members were talking about getting bumped to first class when they told people they where coming home from Iraq/Oki. Not for the three females in the platoon. We didn't get shit. The men got free drinks at bars and all kinds of privileges. Not the females. If he turned down the bump to first class he is just an asshole. Take what you are offered and be grateful. Some of us just get stomped on. It was all the same after Afghanistan too. And every leave period on Oki. I never knew a female that got treated anywhere close to as well as the males did. He should have taken the bump and shut his pie-hole. From the shots fired at Lexington and Concord to the bombs dropped on ISIS today the Men and women of the armed forces keep us safe from harm. This person needs to understand a little kindness to those who serve goes a long way. People and corporations have to remember the reason they can do what they do, is because of the blood shed by those who have served in uniform.
Every day the men and women of The Armed Services put their lives in harms way for the rights and freedom we take for granted. They don't do what we do for the money or for the glory, we do it for you, the people of The United States of America.
