I had a "randomly generated number" D 02 02 30 when I enlisted in 1971. It was stenciled all over my uniform items. Then they told us to start using our Social Security Account Numbers. It was a practice I disagreed with because I could see that the SS# was becoming a national ID number and it certainly has. You can't do anything any more without telling it to someone. I'm still waiting for the nation ID cards with picture and SS number. Sie papieren, Bitte?
In another stroke of brilliance the Medicare system is also giving us a "randomly generated number" It seems just putting the letter "A' with your Social Security Number was making it too easy for people to use your account to get free medical care. All they needed was your birth date which you are asked constantly.
But not for my friends at Blue Cross Blue Shield who feel it necessary to ask for name, address, telephone number and birth date even if you have to call 10 times in one day and the computer shows you had just called in 15 minutes before. They are such an easy thing to lose with far too much personal info on them for whoever finds them. I know many airmen who lost theirs after leaving basic and had to order new ones. Most people may not think much of that but when it has your full name and social on there that can become a big issue down the line. That and most people keep them after service and will of course still have to keep track of them or at least destroy them.

Using the DOD ID number or some other number would work much better and I think would enable service members to sleep better at night knowing the don't have to worry about someone stealing their identity from those little tags.
