Once again the uniform is in the spotlight on the internet. Two service members have now posed in uniform while holding their babies in the US Flag. Also, once again there is a new picture of a mom, in uniform, posing while breastfeeding. I don't want this discussion to be about pro or anti any cause. That's for a different discussion, if at all. The bottom line - should service members be promoting any causes or making statements while in uniform? I was trained that the answer should be a resounding no. If you want to support breastfeeding, do it in civilian clothes and no mention of service or rank. If you want to show that the US is a nurturing and protective place by using the flag as a baby carrier...do it in civilian clothing with no mention of service or rank. These may not be hot button political issues, but they can easily turn into them. Would people object if I posed on the cover of the NRA recruitment posters, full service dress, with a sign that says "From my cold, dead hands"? You bet there would be a firestorm and I am certain my rear would be chewed six ways from Saturday. These people aren't getting punished (so they claim), which tells me that leadership is tiptoeing around the problem as to not offend whatever groups are out there. They don't want to come off as anti-breastfeeding or anti-patriotic picture that violates the US Flag Code (which, admittedly, isn't law and is probably outdated anyways).

What do you think? Since I just opened Pandora's Box by saying the US Flag Code is probably outdated, is our mentality about the uniform outdated as well? Is society smart enough to realize that Private Johnny or Amn Bonehead isn't speaking for the entire service when they do this?

If you wanna be an activist civilian style than get out or don’t come in military. If you want to be active in defending the rights of Others to bare their breast to the world while their child breast feeds than join the military.

I’m not a fan of using the uniform or flag for photo opportunities to prove points or promote things. What’s the point.

Join nearly 2 million former and current members of the US military, just like you.
