Thoughts on U.S. and Japan establishing Military Bases in the Philippines

They wanted us out in 1991! Now they want us back? Hell NO!

When they kicked us out before, they said we don't want you here, we don't need you here. I f we go back there we will need plenty of air coverage too. Subic Bay and Clark AB. under our control not theirs. That or no deal!!

So true about the Corruption there. It seems almost every week something new.

I think its a good idea but it needs to be minimal. I have heard some proposals about just returning to Cubi Point as the airfield is in great shape, the maintenance shops are still up and running, and most of the office / admin places are intact. Cost would be minimal and as a plus the piers are still there in great shape. When I was there in 2010 they still were using the forklifts that had the USN / SRF stencils on them and the brows for the ships still say US Navy on them. But the downside is the openly corrupt government officials who will take the money and use if for personal gain instead of developing the area.

Agree PO1 Boucher, however, with respect, we don't have to look overseas to find corrupt government officials !!, _enough_ Today there appears to be a lot of interest in the various Islands in the South China Sea.. and they say ..Location, Location, Location.. The Philippines offered strategic locations for the U.S., and if like stated, "an agreement between the two nations" were met and totally enforced.. well, I believe it would work.. Stateside all branches comply with SET rules.. IF we apply, and comply with these SAME rules overseas.. I believe we would be welcomed.. being sloppy.. The HOST Country wants us Gone !! GAO/NSIAD 92-51, Philippines "base closure", estimated cost for closure at "superfunds", picking up beer bottles, paper ETC.. won't cost "superfunds", Chemical issues do, We were NOT totally at fault, however, the Visiting Country is Always under the microscope, therefore always at fault..
