What blew my mind was how long they lasted. One time it lasted 12 hours, at least the wind part of it.

Nothing like that but a different variant of the same concept. I'm a Mt Pinatubo Survivor. Volcanic Ash with Rain courtesy of Typhoon Yunya. Warm wet cement raining down from above.

Yea, the one we had near Al Qiam sucked. We out on top of the bluff and got nailed. Had sand in every crease in my skin. Every caught a cold after that also.

Too many to remember..lol. Always loved when it would rain mud.
I dug out a photo from FOB Marez Mosul, 2011. This wasn't too bad...could actually see..lol. The color always made it feel like i was on another planet.

Well, no sandstorms, but in my Navy days, I survived Typhoon Rose off the coast of North Viet Nam in 1971, not to mention some thirty odd hurricanes and other typhoons in the Pacific. Being on an Aircraft Carrier for several of them did not ensure a much better ride than the two Tin Cans I was also on during those years. Washing machine on steroids just about describes it.

Never a sand storm, but I've been in the Bering Sea during a 100 year storm, during which I seriously thought I had the farm all paid for.

One blew in while I was at BIAP waiting to catch a flight to Kuwait and home on EML, May 2005. There was no room inside the tents, so I laid on the ground on my ruck, cinched my boonie cap over my face, and went to sleep. When I woke up, the sand storm had passed and I was covered in about a 0.5" of sand.

I have to start off, unfortunately, I don't have any photos, but it looked like a very wide, and tall of course, tornado of just orange and tan. It was 50+ kt winds and it was a really nasty storm. That was only about a week ago.

Had one come in during R&R in Kuwait. We waited 2 days before we could fly out back to Afghanistan.
