Thinking about a MBA?

After spending four years on recruiting duty and enticing individuals to forgo education at the next level to pursue a career in the Marine Corps; I have ultimately landed on the other side of the fence.

Not only do I see the huge advantage of having the higher education box checked, but I have also come to the realization that in order to reach the VP level it is a necessity.

Veterans play an essential role in a successful MBA program. They come hardwired with the needed leadership skills, however often times lack the "business knowledge". I myself thought, "I am a leader, I am qualified for most jobs out there". That is until I read the education requirements. Initially I was angry at the fact that I was most likely more qualified for the job than the person that was interviewing me. However after further exploration, I saw the light!

Earning a MBA helps to bridge the gap between military and civilian leadership. The soft skills needed in the civilian world often times are already present in veterans, however the hard skills or the teachable aspects of the business world are where many of us could benefit from a MBA.

My personal opinion is that an MBA is a lot like basic training. Everyone has one and they provide very little in the way of advantage in the civilian career. I have one, it was difficult and I learned a lot. However, the job offers I received for it were. Ever very impressive or what I was looking for. Now my background is different than yours so please take that into account but at most I was offered was 60k annually. My MS in cyber provided with me several job offers and I was highly competitive in the field. I'd strongly recommend you look at you really want to do and choose the appropriate degree that reflects that. I dont simply get an MBA or any degree for the sake of having it, you'll be disappointed and wasted time and money. Free advice, its worth what you paid for it
