Do you remember Windows Longhorn? It was suppose to replace Windows XP in the 2005 time frame.

What happened was Windows XP was being nailed in regards to security. Do you remember when using Windows XP before service pack 1, where you would get pop up pings, malware, and all kinds of issues. Well, Windows XP was such a security nightmare, that Windows Longhorn was delayed as a result. Most people do not realize this, but Windows Vista was really their Windows 7. Windows Longhorn (the blue pic) had the look of Windows XP, but was transitioning to become the new Windows OS in 2005.

Anyways, as a result of the security issues... Longhorn was pushed off and XP kept getting patched. Remember, XP had 3 additional service packs. As a result of XP constantly being fixed, longhorns was becoming outdated. Basically, Microsoft in the 2005 time frame needed a new and stronger looking OS. Basically, Windows Vista is really Windows 7 beta. Windows Vista was never meant to be released that early. Windows Vista was suppose to come out in 2009 (but came out in 2007 instead). Windows Longhorn was suppose to come out in 2005 time frame. Anyways, Microsoft was tired of losing money by not releasing anything and released Vista and wanted better security. The problem with Vista was that it required super hardware upgrades like 4GB of ram and better video graphics cards. As a result, Windows Vista was a flop... because everyone was using a beta version of Windows 7. That's why when Windows 7 came out, it looked like a cleaned up version of Vista and lower hardware requirements due to extensive feedback from Vista. So to sum this up:

Microsoft Original Plan:
1. Windows XP (2001 timeframe)
2. Windows Longhorn (2005 time frame) << a better XP
3. Windows Vista (2009 timeframe) << was suppose to Win7 stable

What caused the problems for the timeline:
1. XP security nightmares.
2. Windows Longhorn Delay.
3. Windows Vista released early to make money in 2007 timeframe.
4. Windows 7 released after to cleanup vista.

Actually Timeline.
1. Windows XP (2001)
2. (2001-2007) Windows XP service packs, security problems.
3. Windows Vista (2007) released to make money, not ready.
4. Windows 7 (2009) released to fix Vista
5. Windows 8 (2012) released to play catchup to Apple.

Basically, Windows had a vision, planned poorly. They failed to realize the transition towards mobile usage in regards to phones and tablets. That's why Windows 8 is a failure. Windows 9 seeks to tie all systems together.

The problem Windows 9 will suffer if not addressed:
1. Lack of developers
2. Competition between SURFACE and PARTNERS
3. SURFACE prices do not come down
4. Not getting rid of RT
5. Not pissing of their partners, yet compete to control the experience as Apple does.
6. Threat from Google, use of cheap chrome books.
7. Threat from Android, use of cheap tablets.
