The one thing I remember back when I was a private was....... https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/the-one-thing-i-remember-back-when-i-was-a-private-was

For me it would have to be the fear of looking at a Non-Commissioned Officer when I first got to my unit after OSUT Basic/AIT because of the one time I "eyeballed" a Drill Sergeant and got "shark-attacked" Hahaha....What do you remember as a Private(or whatever your equivalent for your branch of service)? I was also slightly uneasy at how "laid back" it was in the Reception Company we got assigned to before we were passed over to our new units. It wasn't unprofessional but NCO's sitting down and talking to Lower Enlisted without needing to stand at Parade Rest and actually being able to look at them was so weird LOL SPC Kara Sport Sun, 27 Apr 2014 12:10:13 -0400 2014-04-27T12:10:13-04:00 Response by MCPO Private RallyPoint Member made May 15 at 2014 11:20 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/the-one-thing-i-remember-back-when-i-was-a-private-was?n=127818&urlhash=127818

After OSUT (Basic & AIT), I went to my first unit and two days later we were in the field at Fort Polk, LA. Of course, for those that know Fort Polk, it rained like a sonovacrap all over us.

A brand new 2LT had reported in just a few days before me, and was my new Platoon Leader. He had set up his tent in this REALLY nice divot in the earth - to give him more headroom - and, did I mention that it was raining like a sonovacrap? His little hovel filled with a foot of water.

He marched over to our little gaggle and ordered my section to move his shelter and hang all of his stuff so it would dry.

The Platoon Sergeant quietly asked the 2LT to speak with him privately - and a few moments later came back all red-faced (hard to do when you are a dark-skinned Black guy), and told us to hold up, that he would do it.

Yeah, we knew what happened, but I was still in Recruit mode where Senior NCO's were gods and Officers outranked them.

(the 2LT turned out to be a spectacular officer - taught by a very skilled PSG!)
