The military is a largely diverse organization. Did joining the military change your perspective of the world?

I came from all white northern Wisconsin. The Marine Corps introduced me to race relations.

Being in the military and being raised as a military dependent was and continues to be a unique perspective and I thank my parents for being open minded and allowing me to see things in my own eyes. As for the world and the small part I have had the pleasure of both living in and visiting it is vast in size and thought.

It opened my eyes about the language and cultural differences within the USA. e.g. Y'all vs. you guys, wicked, pop vs. soda vs. Coke, buggy vs. shopping cart and different ways to pronounce pen, ferry, etc.

I think the key to enjoying being stationed in various places is to accept each place for what it has to offer and not compare each with your hometown or your favorite duty station.

It absolutely did. Joined Marines and poof instant diversity. Found out that while we are all different, we all bleed green. Got to see all different parts of the world, and realize just how great we have it in the USA. Now, if we can only keep it.....

Absolutely! When I joined the Army right out of high school in '81, I came from a small community where everyone was the same. The Army connected me with folks from different life styles, cultures, and ethics. In the end, I learned that folks are more the same than different despite our outward appearances. I continue to benefit from my exposure to others that the military has afforded me.
