Unless you've grown up around Western wear and horse tack, I know there is a certain amount of sticker-shock that comes with pricing and shopping for that Cav Trooper hat! Notice, I didn't say Stetson! There's a reason for that. You're a Trooper in the 10th at Carson. I know of a great hatmaker up in Greeley who will custom-make you a Cav hat, put your name on it, the date you earned your spurs, and your Regimental Crest for right around the same price as a Stetson off the rack. You go into his shop, he custom measures your head, the hat is uniquely yours! Forever! His name is Trent Johnson and he has made hats for everyone from lowly cowboys to Vladimir Putin and both Presidents Bush. I'm not a Cav guy, but I'm a horse guy, and I own two hats made by Trent.

Here's his website: http://greeleyhatworks.com/

He doesn't have pics of his Cav stuff on his website, but shoot him an email, and he'll send you some pics. Or, just wait (see 2 below)

2. Save your pennies for a personal one in the future. Every time you drop $4-5 on a mocha coffee drink or get a pizza because DFAC food sucked at lunch that day, think about that stetson. You can have a monthly amount pulled from your account and sent to savings. If you can even afford $25/month, you will have enough to afford one by the Holiday Dress inspection season. 1SG Private RallyPoint Member Sat, 25 Apr 2015 19:34:15 -0400 2015-04-25T19:34:15-04:00 Response by MAJ Private RallyPoint Member made Apr 25 at 2015 8:09 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/the-cav-hat-anyone-know-an-economical-way-to-buy-a-stetson?n=619337&urlhash=619337

I have a Stetson that hasn't left it's box in 5 years, so I definitely understand your hesitance to buy something you won't wear often. Find your local E4 short timer that is disgruntled with the unit. Offer him a nice case of beers or a good liter of hard alcohol for the Stetson. Then buy your maroon cord and your all set. A couple hundred dollars is a decent chunk of change for a PFC, but something like setting aside 50 dollars a pay check shouldn't be outside the realm of possibility. Of course I'm not in your shoes and don't know your financial situation, but I just recommend that you save up for it and get something quality made that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
