That moment when you realized you were completely a dad/mom?

My latest one occurred during my current training TDY. Here I am in sitting in my hotel room, watching the Disney Channel because nothing else better is on and I am just use to watching it. Hey, I gotta keep current on the latest episodes of Girl Meets World and Dog with a Blog.

What is your "I'm totally a Dad/Mom" moment?

Out on Patrol stopping violators! Really, I got a radio call saying that my wife was in labor. I rushed home, loaded her in the cruiser and code 3 to the hospital. That was the first of five! It hasn't stopped since. It is my youngest son's birthday today. What a day!

Cleaned up the kid after vomiting, then cleaned up the vomit. Then started making dinner (after washing hands of course) afterwards without batting an eyelash.

I was sitting on the couch folding laundry, like I do every Sunday. Clean House on Saturday, spend Sunday doing laundry and watching TV with my 2 year old daughter. In the middle of folding the endless pile of socks I realized I was fully in mommy mode because I was intently watching Doc McStuffins...... While Sophia was sound asleep upstairs.

Giving a briefing, look down to see my son's preschool is calling me. Stop briefing to answer call, thinking it must be a emergency, to hear this, "You're out of town aren't you?" I respond, "Yes". to hear "I thought so your son came to school today in his PJs superman cape and all".

My youngest son told his 3rd grade teacher the reason he didn't do his homework was because his dad said if he made a decision and was prepared to take the consequences go ahead.

I always watch Disney and Nick Junior even when my daughter is not home or is asleep.

I think my first "Dad" moment though was she was doing something bad so I yelled "Kayla Lyn Miller! Get your ass over here!" I then realized that I used her full name, just like my parents used to do when I was in trouble!

For me, the occasion on which I felt like a real Dad was when I was TDY/Deployed, and missed my kids more than I missed my wife. Didn't matter why or have to make sense, it was just the realization I was responsible for more than just ME. You remember ME of course. That's the person who used to buy a new dorm car with the coffee can sized tail pipe a banging sound system for that car, or whatever ME used to want. Forget that. Those days are over, maybe forever! LOL

We adopted our first at 9 months. Josh was severely malnourished. My wife and her mom were immediately in "he's ours" mode. It took me about a week. I fell asleep with Josh laying on my chest. Two hours later, he was still there so that was it. Funny thing, when we went to pick up our second adopted son (turns out a full sibling), my wife was into "how can I divide my love" syndrome. Jason fussed and fussed and wouldn't have anything to do with her. I said give him to me and that was it. He latched on to me immediately too. Ever since the first was Mom's son and and second Dad's son.
