The day after Thanksgiving, no matter how miserable the weather is on Friday... No matter if it will be sunny and dry Saturday... My wife makes me put up the outdoor Christmas decorations. No..., we will never make it onto one of those shows about people who put out over the top Christmas displays... But we put out considerably more lights than most. The biggest barn of three on the property is 40x64. We decorate all three barns, six turkey coops, six chicken coops, three turnout sheds, three wood sheds, the two story farm house (all four sides on each), 1320 feet of roadside fence, and seven trees. My wife makes a six foot Christmas wreath that is hung above the entrance to the farm.

I start at sun up, my fellow firefighters and farm customers show up throughout the day to make fun at my expense, then pitch in for a couple of hours; in exchange for some spiked coffee or hot chocolate , scratch croissants with homemade preserves and goat's milk butter, homemade turkey pot pie, and home made apple pie with farm made goat cheese, of which I get none... until I am done. (I get turkey noodle soup and black coffee.)

The biggest part of the tradition is that I grumble and gripe about it the entire time I am doing it... It is the one day of the year I am allowed to swear in front of the grandchildren without getting dressed down. But she makes it totally worth it with a hug and a kiss, a cup of hot chocolate with two shots of Kahlua, a smile and a hug when I am done. And best of all..., at Christmas eve dinner, I get to tell everyone how she abused me to get the Christmas decorations up, I get to lie and say that no one helped... (many who helped will be at that dinner), and she doesn't give me grief about telling stories at her expense (that day only, Christmas decorating only).

The only tradition I can think of is all the cousins (my son, and our nieces and nephews) see how big a dog pile they can make, and figure who's going to be the unlucky one at the bottom.

For me, it is all about spending time with family and friends. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
