Sub-dermal Magnets

I was talking to a future sailor.

He asked if there are any regulations that would prevent him from getting a sub dermal magnet in his fingertip. He insists they're not visible after the skin heals, so I don't know if it would fall under the grooming regulation. Or if they use strong enough magnets that it would cause a problem with any equipment...

Thoughts?

10. NAVY PERSONNEL WITH WAIVERABLE PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS. Tattoos/body art/brands/mutilation/dental ornamentation may be waived if they existed prior to 24 January 2003 and are not prejudicial to good order, discipline, and morale or are of a nature to bring discredit upon the naval service.

11. NAVY PERSONNEL WITH NON-WAIVERABLE PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS. If removal or alteration of tattoos/body art/brands/mutilation/dental ornamentation is determined by a military medical healthcare provider not to be feasible, the member may be processed for involuntary separation, if deemed appropriate by the commanding officer.

My first question is why would he want to do that but to each their own. If he is working in a field that requires to work with electronics/repair electronics probably not a good idea. I would advise him not to get it done personally.

Ma'am,

There are tools that special forces use that can not have a magnetic reading and by him installing magnets in his fingers he's limiting himself to the rates and billets that he can choose from. Some of those rates actually have a huge salary and can even land him a really good job in the outside world. So I would advise not to get them until after his tour of duty is over.

Not sure if its exactly in regs but its not specifically against regs. And for the electronics work bits, it actually would help that future sailor. If that person was working on energized equipment, with the level ships power operates at, it could save their life. They would feel it from a foot away. But the common magnetic implant that people get isn't strong enough to do anything to electronics, do anything significant in an MRI or even be detected by metal detectors or those airport X-Ray machines. The only specific thing that the regs say about implants is that they must not be intended to present an unnatural appearance, which a magnetic implant would not do. Depending on the rate they have, it could be like a super power. Imagine, a YN being able o pick up a paper clip from milimeters away!
