Starting a va claim while still in the guard?

My son is in the guard and asked me if it was possible to start a claim with the va to help cover the costs associated with the psoriasis that started while he was in boot camp

Your son cannot file a claim any earlier than 180 days before he separates. He cannot collect compensation and drill pay at the same time.

I wouldn't bother if it's a small precentage..go to the VA Schedule of disability list 4.118 . I have it and I'm schedule at 0% disability ...it's on my face.....if his condition matches...any actuall numbered percentages..EXACTLY normally 5% body covering Plus for a payable rating....if it's real bad...the NG can give him the boot....why can't he go to a military clinic and get treatment....if he has a 91 day deployment he's a Vet and just apply for VA medical care...means test...Keep all his records copied...I was a USMC vet by 1976 and used the VA and Military clinics while I served on and off in the Guard, Army and Air Force Reserve until 2004....

PS...I believe he can file if he does an Active duty deployment.....but I wouldn't put him on radar.....you just never know with the Guard...

Yes, he can claim this.
If adjudicated to be service connected, he will likely get a 0% rating since it is not disabling, but might get a 10% for scarring or an ongoing condition.
The bigger benefit is that he will be able to get treatment at a VAMC.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition caused by an overactive immune system
