Stars and Stripes Newspapers. Did you read it?

During my time in the Military in Germany, we would buy a copy of the Stars and Stripes newspaper. Mostly for the sports scores (one day late) and the exchange rate. German Deutschmark.

Today there is the online version and even that has been pared by our illustrious leaders but that is another story. What edition did you read and do you read it now?

Yesterday's news tomorrow, but yes, I did read it, particularly when I was in Japan. They still had the bookstores then, but those are long gone. I read it occasionally in Italy, and sometimes in Iraq, particularly my first pump, but only sparingly in Afghan. By time it got to the FOBs and COPs, some of the "news" was already a week or more old!

Read Stars and Stripes in Japan and Vietnam from Feb67 to October 69 also listened to AFRTS in both countries. Also read Grunt Magazine in Nam. Anyone ever read it?

Grew up on it. Worked on it in Europe/High School. Became Senior Correspondent/Chief of Bureaus in the Pacific Edition

Yes, in Okinawa from the mid 80 through the 90s. My oldest son was a paperboy for them from 93-96, Every Tuesday would clip the haircut coupon LOL!

When Inwas stationed in Japan and aboard the USS Midway and the USS Independence, I did read it. I have not been overseas for a TDY or as perm infant party for a very long time so I never even think about that newspaper.

Downrange and overseas I did. I particularly liked it in Korea where it gave a lot of cultural tidbits and intersting things to do on pen. Downrange, it was just something new and different everyday to look at during a year of Groundhog Days.....

Yeah, in RVN I read it mainly for casualties list. Sometimes it was the only way to know if one of our medevac'd guys made it or not. I have a copy of the edition that listed my best friends KIA. Otherwise it was generally political BS.

I liked reading the editorials. I have saved, the Gulf War 1 special editions.... It's interesting to look back at them 23 years later

Read it everyday while assigned to Germany and during all deployments when I could get my hands on it, especially for sports scores and to read the letters to editor/opinion columns

Yes I did and yes I do online still today. Stories plucked from around the world are concentrated, I love the outlook of it and when in theater, I could never figure out distribution. They were never in the same place and usually I found them at the USO and read them religiously.

I do when I can get my hands on one! It was the only newspaper I had access to when stationed overseas (Okinawa) besides the Japanese ones, which looked like a lot of chicken scratch to me. It (Stars & Stripes) was always behind, but then again, so were the football games, I always enjoyed the articles and sports section. I made sure my family knew not to call and tell me the outcome of the games or it would ruin it knowing who won before the game started. The FEN channel was the only one to watch, so you couldn't be choosey!

Not only did I read it, SSgt Private RallyPoint Member, I helped my daughter deliver it when we were stationed in Frankfurt in 1993/1994. We went out at something like 0500 every morning to deliver the paper to our section of the housing area. I think it's a good newspaper for troops serving overseas.

Yes, I read "Stripes" while I was in West Berlin in the mid 70's. To be honest, I was lucky enough to be assigned to AFN TV and had access to the newswires and photofax machines. We had three TV casts every day and AFN radio had news on the hour. (This was back when there was one TV channel and one AM and one FM radio station.) But, back to Stripes... I look at it almost every day online these days. I do recall referring to it as "Yesterdays news tomorrow" sometimes though. Oh, I also read the "Overseas Weekly" from time to time too.

No. I gave up reading and ordering it. It has become the bash the conservative, republican, anti Trump paper. There is little to no news. I am a non party citizen who is very suspicious of all politicians and parties and army times is now nothing more than an apologetic rag for the regressive liberal ALT Left
