SSB/VSB and Disability; How can the government charge you for more than you received?

Back in 1992, I opted to get out of the Army under the SSB program that was in place at the time. Upon my ETS, I received a nice bonus for volunteering to separate early (after 11years). At my final out-processing at Fort Dix, one of the items I had to complete was a medical form. I had a screw put in my knee, which deemed me 10% disabled. When they told me this, one thing they neglected to tell me is that before I received a dime in Disability payments, my disability had to pay back my SSB. Now, that didn't upset me much, until I learned I had to pay back ALL of the money, including the income tax that was withheld. The government got the tax money twice. I should have only had to pay back what I actually received. I later found that soldiers who got out under those same to bonus programs from 1994 on, only had to pay back what they actually received. How can this be just? Is there anything I can do? I was out just shy of 20 years when I finally got my first disability check.

Hi James, dealing with the VA is a nightmare. I good group to trust is Vietnam era veterans at your VA hospital.
We Veterans are always divided by war groupings like WW-2, Korea, Vietnam, Persian gulf and so on.
(IN MY OPINION)
It is not because they want to help veterans but to bundle us in groups to disrupt our ability to stand together for all Veterans benefits and rights!
TAXES ON DISABILITY IS A NATIONAL DISGRACE, IF YOUR DISABLED AND RETIRED YOU HAVE ALREADY PAID MORE THAN MOST. ALSO IN SERVICE OR NOT WE PAID TAXES ON THE MONEY WE EARNED BEFORE BEING DISABLED AND TAXING US AGAIN IS NOT ONLY UNFAIR BUT INSULTING AT A TIME WHEN THE SUPER RICH GET TAX BREAKS THAT ALLOW MOST TO DODGE THEIR RESPONSIBILITY.
TAX THE RICH, THEY MADE THAT MONEY ON OUR BACKS AND DUCK AND DODGE THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE FAIR LIVING WAGE JOBS WITH BENEFITS OR EVEN PAY FOR THE VERY THINGS THEY NEED TO STAY WEALTHY --LIKE SUPPORTING THE COST OF RUNNING OUR GOVERNMENT.

I also was released for the draw down of the military; now 26 years later the VA wants to recoup 32k as of March 2019 by taking all of my disability pay. I am a 100% disabled combat vet. I didn't retire or go into the ready reserve. Also how can DSAF, take money back threw the VA?? please help.

There is some ridiculous law US Code that says you cannot collect a bonus and disability. I am surprised you got a dime of your Disability benefits before they collected back the seperation incentive. Oddly, back in February, I received a check back from DFAS paying me back the taxes I should never have paid. Came from out of the blue.
