So who here ate something great while being hungry over seas then came back to have the same thing and it was terrible?

We patrolled to the bazaar to get eggs and mixed it with rice,onions,potatoes,and an un Godly amount of hot sauce. It was amazing. Tried after being back about a month and couldn't eat more than a couple bites.

Nah, it either went one way or the other. I either liked it or I didn't. I thought middle eastern food was terrible anyway, even the American chains available in the area. Just something not right about it. The fiesta plates they had in Guam are awesome no matter where you are.

I spent a month in India. I've yet to find Indian food that's even remotely as good. The quest for good Naan will consume me yet!

I ate goat in Afghanistan that I thought was awesome, all the Chai in the villages was amazing, and same with the bread there. Anything I find even remotely similar just doesn't taste right

Pretty much anything Thai. Most eateries "Americanize" their food. That's why there's seldom decent regional Mexican, French, German, or SE Asia stuff. A new Mexican place opened up here in Bonners Ferry and it is only slightly better than the abomination by the school. I never got too much into Moroccan food so wouldn't go to one here either. The absolute worst Mexican place is in Christchurch NZ. The smell 20 feet from the door sends you away.

Speaking of Mexican, Rosa's of Santa Fe sets the standard. I was surprised in Oklahoma by Lupe Swensen's Mexican Smorgasbord. Both are long gone.

I will say there's good Japanese food to be found here.

Korea - Yakimando - Mystery meat deep fried in a flour-like shell. Vegetables optional.
Japan - Yakisoba - Fried cabbage, Add the meat of choice/convenience/budget
I'm confident I've misspelled both. But, these dishes in front of you signaled the end of good liberty call. They were predicated with formaldehyde-based beer. Yet to find anything as good stateside.

As a submariner, the only foreign port we pulled into was the one we left from, Rota, Spain. The only really good dish there was Paella (the national dish of Spain ), and I have never found anything similar at home. As for the food on the submarine, I just can't afford to eat that good in restaurants at home. Our off-duty time was spent in Charleston, SC, and our cooks were always trying out new dishes to add to their luxury restaurant menus where they worked while the other crew had the boat.

I have never found a German restaurant in the states that is anything close to real German food. Solution, cook it yourself! That way you eat in the best restaurant in town-your house.

Coffee. I was chilled to the bone on guard duty and a 11b made me a cup of MRE coffee in a dirty canteen cup.

Yakisoba, in Japan. That stuff was GOLD! I couldn't eat enough over there. Here, all I get that's labeled yakisoba is spaghetti with meat & no sauce. It really sucks.

The little place at the bottom of the hill going into MCAS Futenma. Everything I ate there on the way back to the barracks was the best food i ever had.
