My only concern is of improper influence upon the investigator. There are folks who are heavily invested in Berghdahl being the victim in all of this. If it comes out that he deserted, it would reflect VERY badly on them.

This case is not unprecedented. Several of cases like this were investigated during the Korean War and Vietnam. High profile cases of suspected defection or desertion were investigated by top military officials or even Congress. I wouldn't expect any less in this case.
On a different note, if he is considered a deserter, I would be more concerned about the folks that were leading him at the time. I cannot fathom any circumstance in which I would place a questionable individual in a position that could lead to this, and by their own admission, he had left his post in the past. Apparently with no consequence to the soldier. Every seasoned NCO knows that Joe will do what he can get away with, so it is up to the leaders to ensure compliance.

Ultimately, they will find he was not fit for the duties prescribed (mentally unfit), his leadership will be reprimanded for not addressing his condition, and 5 Enemy combatants get to eat a home cooked meal and come right back after us. Thie deal had been on the table for at least two years. The names never changed. I actually heard Obama say that we leave no man behind. Where was he on Bengazzi then? You left four behind Mr. President. The media has made an attempt to glamorize the actions of Bergdahl the jihadist. We know for a fact that six of our brotheren were slain trying to recover Bergdahl. I am a firm believer that we should never elect a president that has never served in the military. Now that we have, look at what hesitation has begot us as a nation. And it's not over yet!

I fear this is no longer about the facts. Appointing a 2-star to investigate possible misconduct by a SGT (PFC at capture, I believe)? Nope, no politics at work there.
