Some states and counties charge extra for these plates for personal vehicles. I live in Ohio Columbiana county. I have veteran plates for my truck and don't have to pay any extra for these plates just had to show my license, insurance and a copy of my DD214. I know that in some states the plates I have listed above you are charged extra for them. I like the fact that I don't have to pay for these plates. I feel that as long as you did your time got out under a DD214 that says honorable, retired, or medical discharge you should be able to get the plates listed above at no extra charge so you can place them on your personal vehicle with pride like I do. I look forward to hearing feed back from Vets and also Active duty it is your right to show what you did for our country. Thank You Frank J. Leonardo

I will saw that in My state Veteran plates do cost extra but the $10 they d charge goes toward the veterans homes in Montana. It is a good way to "create revenue" for a worth while organization while supporting a very good cause.

That is true and I would not mind that as long as it was going to a cause like that. Thanks for the response

Frank, Good points. In many states the specialty license plates serve as a means to generate revenue for organizations that the plates recognize. Whether its artistic expression, homes for pets, or to honor our veterans in a variety of ways. I think we should have to pay for the novelty plates; however, it should vary by type of plate. For example, a purple heart recipient or a 70% or more disabled vet shouldn't pay as much as a standard veteran plate. Just my 2 cents...

Due to still waiting on the VA's final decision it cost me an extra 20 dollars for my plate here in Maine. Now that I have my 100% P&T decision from the VA my tags are free. But the city here will still charge you through the nose in excise tax.
