Should training be realistic, being blown out of proportion, by showing off to put lives at great risk?

Maybe not what you'd call the same, but don't many training schools use live fire exercises? By that I mean these scenes of our troops crawling under barbed wire in mud trenches. That comes pretty darn close to qualify as getting shot at, ya think???

I need to do some research to confirm...but didn't we do this in the not so distant past? I have been told by WW2 era vets this was common practice...though under somewhat more controlled circumstances.

My thoughts? You get what you put in to training-Make it safe, and you remove something of the "realism" factor. If you accept that the end product is a lethally effective solider...perhaps you accept the risks of casualties in training. If you want a sustainable force of volunteers, looking for advancement, job training, education and benefits-On top of being lethal...you can't have this mentality.

The Spartans get a lot of "myth treatment"...but it's unquestioned that they were considered the finest soldiers of their day. Look at their culture and compare it to that of other, impressive contemporary military societies.

HOLY SH*T!!!! That is certainly one way to ensure realistic training. Not exactly what I would ask of my training to be......but if it works for them.....but damn.
