There are a lot of strong opinions out there on current events. God knows I have them too. But there are a lot of current service members on this site that can find themselves in big trouble for putting their personal opinions out on the internet.
Once that conversation got going, the usual suspects started tossing around vitriol at other members and the whole thing went to hell.
It is ok to have a controversial position, and this is as good a place to air it as any. We just have to stay away from attacking the person, and keep the debate on the subject matter. I was a little surprised that thread survived admin scrutiny as long as it did.
Too bad. I was looking forward to reading responses to my post. Oh well.Response by 1SG Private RallyPoint Member made Nov 21 at 2015 2:26 PM2015-11-21T14:26:40-05:002015-11-21T14:26:40-05:00SSgt Christopher Brose1123776

Ideally, this would be a free-wheeling discussion group that could look beyond things like insults and coarse phrasing -- a little colorful language could be a very valid means of making a point. The problem is most people are too distracted by it. Say something the wrong way, and suddenly the discussion is not about the point you made but about how you made it.

One of my life mottos is "What you believe is only as good as why you believe it." So I am used to assessing the reasons for what I believe, and comparing them to the reasons other people have for believing what they believe. Usually, I conclude my reasons are better, but not always.

In the context of discussion, it means I am used to presenting my arguments with as much reason and persuasion as I can muster. Often, the person I am responding to might be a lost cause, but objective 3rd parties reading my words are more likely to be swayed by them if I present a solid argument and do not distract from it.

People are free to express themselves how they want, but our choice of expression has consequences. Even on a forum like this, we have the freedom to f-bomb, insult, use racist epitaphs, etc... and then the mods then have the freedom to limit our access or ban us altogether.

Ultimately, it comes down to which consequences you are willing to accept for your right to say what you want to say, how you want to say it. If your goal is some emotional release, then perhaps a tirade is an appropriate outlet. If your goal is to persuade people to your way of thinking, tirades aren't advisable.Response by SSgt Christopher Brose made Nov 21 at 2015 2:32 PM2015-11-21T14:32:55-05:002015-11-21T14:32:55-05:00SGT Francis Wright1123781

Just tell it like it is.Response by SGT Francis Wright made Nov 21 at 2015 2:36 PM2015-11-21T14:36:26-05:002015-11-21T14:36:26-05:00SGM Steve Wettstein1123904

There are ways to get your point across and not being a dick while doing it.Response by SGM Steve Wettstein made Nov 21 at 2015 3:56 PM2015-11-21T15:56:17-05:002015-11-21T15:56:17-05:00LCpl Mark Lefler1123973

The issue isn't about being PC, its about being respectful and adult.
