Should there be more requirements to become an NCO? https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/should-there-be-more-requirements-to-become-an-nco

As a fairly young soldier getting ready to go, to the promotion board fairly soon. What are your thoughts on stricter requirements to become and NCO? In my unit I have seen way to many NCO's that do not know, or cannot complete simple task related to the job or MOS. How are these NCO's suppose to teach and lead soldier's? Should there be a skills test or evaluation while you are actually doing your job to become an NCO and not just go to the board parade in front of a couple 1st SGTs and a CSM who 9 times out of 10 barely know who you are, your work ethic, or your real ability to lead soldiers? Those first sergeants and the CSM are counting on the Soldier's chain of command to honestly recommend (or not) Soldiers who are ready to be NCOs (or not).

Part of being an NCO will be learned after the individual serves in the position, but I do agree that the individual should be technically and tactically proficient, and ready to become an NCO, before being recommended to appear before the board. Again, that's up to the Soldier's leadership chain -- to decide if the individual is prepared to be an NCO.
